I visit the west desert quite often.  These are usually all day or multiple day trips as I go deep because it's real there.  Usually I go to the Nevada border and back.  There is lots of wildlife to see, Antelope, wide horses, polygamist, and Mormon crickets. The scariest is the crickets.  I only see them infrequently, maybe five times in twenty years, but each time was a traumatic event. When they are there, they are there in force.  Millions of them. They cover the roads and splat on your grill and windshield.  You can't camp anywhere near them as they will invade your camp, your tent and your cooking.  I've heard they can chew your face off at night if you're not careful.
