What is the purpose of taking role in Relief Society and Elders quorum

Our relief society presidency is trying to figure out how to take attendance for sisters who are not in Relief Society for the full time. As part of that question we are contemplating what the purpose of taking role in Relief Society is. I’ve been trying to search it and have looked in the handbook but I can’t find anything.

Does anybody know what they actually do with those numbers?

Part of the budget the ward receives is based on 2nd hour meeting attendance.  More people means more money needed for activities.

The presidencies should also be looking at attendance to identify any brothers or sisters who stop attending or their attendance becomes inconsistent.  This can help with ministering priorities.

Our dilemma is how to count sisters who only show up for the last few minutes or last few minutes but weren't gone because of a calling or church responsibility.

Sounds like a good decision for the president to make 🙂

To see the activity among the members. I was RS secretary in two RS presidencies. My mind is foggy now in remembering but I had to turn in quarterly reports. There was something in if they only come one time per month they'd be fine, but if missed the whole month we'd have to do something, I'm stinking losing my mind now and can't remember! Maybe it had to do with needing to make sure the sisters get visited at least once quarterly as well? Or one of the presidents liked to know so she'd visit them if their visiting teachers missed visiting. Oh boy, I'll have to think on this now and hopefully get back, if this hasn't already been answered. But I know it wasn't the RS president I turned it into, but a member of the stake perhaps? ETA: correction, I did give a copy to the RS president too.

Oh my, now it's all coming back. I'd say count them!

For callings: in all my wards we had rolls sent around in YW and primary.  Some secrtaries will also check the library when passing out or gathering the other rolls.

It goes on the quarterly report.

While the church wants the data attendance in Relief Society doesn’t impact the ward’s budget allocation. That comes from Sacrament meeting attendance in general, Young Men, Young Women, and Primary attendance in second hour, and the number of YSA people attending any meeting.

I don’t have the statement in front of me but each person in average sacrament meeting attendance and each Young Man and Young Woman gets you about $12 each. YSA and Primary gets you about $6 each. That is per quarter. Then the stake sets how much of that you get (normal from what I know is around 75%) with the rest going to fund the stake and the stake can set separate allocation amounts for each category. For example if the stake does a lot of the YSA activities (pretty normal) they may keep more of that allocation.

The Bishopric MIGHT use Relief Society and Elder’s Quorum attendance to create the budget for the various organizations as the Bishopric decides how much goes to each organization. I never have though. I usually look at the last year’s expenditures and adjust for any big event changes and submit a proposed budget to the Bishop. Then he can tinker with it or approve it or revamp it or whatever. It is usually not something the Bishopric collectively discusses in the Bishoprics I have served with. In my experience the counselors tend to leave the money to the Bishop and clerks except for helping process donations.
