Quote

Archaeologists have discovered the ruins of a vast ancient Maya civilization that flourished more than 2,000 years ago in northern Guatemala, reports a new study. This long-lost urban web encompassed nearly 1,000 settlements across 650 square miles, linked by an immense causeway system, which was mapped out with airborne laser instruments, known as LiDAR.

The results of the LiDAR survey “unveiled a remarkable density of Maya sites” in Guatemala’s Mirador-Calakmul Karst Basin (MCKB) that “challenges the old notion of sparse early human occupation” in this area during the “Preclassical” period spanning 1,000 BC to 150 AD, according to a study published this month in the journal Cambridge Core.

Fabulous news.  I am sure Mark Wright is all over this; his health, I understand is improving and he might be back on the front line of BOM history soon!

One of his theories is that the descendants of Lehi lived among the Maya much as we members live among our own cultures within the larger nation-states to which we belong.

2000 years from now will some archeologist be searching the ruins of " Los Angeles" for Mormon pottery?

That would be an analogy for one of his theories.  Obviously as a subgroup living in a much larger civilization, the members of one religion will not stand out well  archeologicaly as their own culture.

So Mayan culture might well include Nephite culture

Modern times are likely a bit different though given cheap mass productions allows for more culture identity items in more homes…plus the unfortunate longevity of plastics.  While the temple ornaments made out of metal and Greg Olsen’s more uniquely LDS pictures (Olsen was the number one Christian artist in Canada in the early 2000’s fyi) may have disintegrated, I fear they may find traces of the Moroni tree topper https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/angel-moroni-statue-christmas-tree-topper-lds-4 or Nephi and his family and other BoM action figures https://deseretbook.com/p/action-figure-three-nephites-q6? .

I believe that someone like John Sorenson or Brandt Gardner would say that the original landing area as well as the land of Nephi was within the Mayan cultural area.  But the Zarahemla area was part of the Mixe-Zoque language area.

If Lehi's family just melted into the existing peoples, what was it about them that ,over centuries , kept them in the political and military positions of power ?

They seemed to have established themselves, both in the Land of Nephi as well as later in Zarahemla, as a ruling family and were able to hold onto that.

Being culturally assimilated doesn't necessarily mean that a family or group looses it's political power.

Thanks.  I am the last guy you ask about BOM history

I don't believe it's necessary!  ;)

Like ALL royal families! Look at the Hapsburgs!  And that Charlie fella ;) who just became king of England.  Just maybe he's got some relatives who aren't English? ;)
