When I read about the actions of some of the members of the families of Abraham, Isaac , and Jacob/Israel, I see deceit , subterfuge , malice, sexual sin, murder etc. The scriptures sure don't hide this, and that is one of the reasons I see truth there. Can it be said that those families were....umm ... dysfunctional? 3

Can it be said that those families were....umm ... dysfunctional? My mother used to say the scriptures make it clear that every sin that ever existed was committed by someone in Jesus’ bloodline. Thus he had to overcome the ‘genetic’ inheritance of sin, the drives to give into temptation so to speak while living a sinless life as well as purge the inherited blood debt (one ancient view is the family or community is responsible for the damage the sin of one of its members caused). It was symbolic to her of the Atonement being universally available and covering any sin truly repented. I think the scriptures make it clear there is nothing we can do that will make God walk away from us. It is always us who walk away from him and he is there entreating us to return to his embrace as he was with Israel. Edited January 29, 2022 by Calm 10

We should not be depressed that ours is not perfect. Which may be why there are such extreme stories in the scriptures. Both to show the positive stubbornness of God and the less admirable stubbornness of man, which at times is so bad that God must allow the hellish consequences of their choices to get dumped on them.
