Alexi Nakatology Posted January 21, 2022 Posted January 21, 2022 (edited) Can anybody help me? Explain some songwriting process? I am also specifically interested in the LDS use of church bells? (Or any interesting use of church bells at all…) Anyone have any insight? Edited January 21, 2022 by Alexi Nakatology

bluebell Posted January 21, 2022 Posted January 21, 2022 Take this with a grain of salt because it doesn't sound like it's the kind of music you are interested in, and you might be very talented with writing musical scores and not need music writing software at all. But the only kind of help that I can try to offer is to check out software like garage band. I don't know if garage band has bells, but it's an excellent program to use to get started writing music for songs, especially if you don't play the instruments yourself and don't actually know how to write music but you know how you want it to sound. Once you get garage band figured out you can graduate to programs that are even better, but cost money. Garage band is free. My son uses that kind of software to write all of his music and you can do a lot with it. He doesn't write church music so it might not be a perfect fit though. https://music.apple.com/us/artist/raddeus/1522414311 If you want to listen to free previews of some of his songs you can hear some of the things that that kind of music software can do. He's a goof and the whitest rapper ever, which I'm not a super fan of, but Bad Choices has less of a rap vibe so maybe listen to the preview of that one. That's probably not that helpful but it's all I've got.

So I’ve been playing acoustic music off and on, self taught for about 12 years and I just recently hit a songwriting groove and have written about 40 songs since last summer. Songwriting has proven rewarding and extremely difficult so I’m open to any advice someone wants to offer 🤷♀️ 2

Did Joseph Smith ever explain something like this? Don’t think so. Early church members came from a more Low Church background, Puritan slant. Maybe they didn’t go in for bells? Our churches after all are pretty plain. From various dramas I have seen dealing with small town England, it appears bells are a big expense for a church. Maybe it was simply practical. Calm Posted January 22, 2022 Posted January 22, 2022 (edited) Also this… https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/1981/02/i-have-a-question/what-is-the-story-behind-the-bell-on-temple-square?lang=eng Quote I have always felt that the bell tower is on temple square in response to a prophecy President Brigham Young made in 1862. President Young said: “Right west of the temple … we shall build a tower and put a bell on it. … This plan was shown to me in a vision when I first came onto the ground.”2 In 1961, President David O. McKay presided at ceremonies at KSL-TV where the bell furnished a new time signal for both the television and radio stations. On that program, President McKay observed, “In its own way, the Nauvoo bell is a symbol of religious freedom in our land. … Hourly, the sound of the bell should serve to remind us that religious freedom and liberty is as much at stake in the present difficult world situation as political and economic freedom. … When we hear, henceforth, the sound of the Nauvoo bell, let it remind us anew that our nation and our community owes its existence to our trust in God.” https://www.mormonwiki.com/Nauvoo_Temple_Bell Doesn’t appear like any prejudice against them. Bet it was mostly practical, an added expense and then it just became habit not to have them. One of the places I lived as a teen had a Catholic Church further up from our chapel, which was a block or so from my house. If my windows were open I could hear the bells, but iirc that neighbourhood shut them down eventually for noise pollution. I think they were allowed on Sunday and maybe at noon. Too long ago to remember the details. One of my favorite authors is Dorothy L. Sayers and the first mystery of hers I read was all about bell ringing. It would be so cool to have that as a church calling. A more informative article…haven’t read it much though…looks like Nauvoo Temple has a bell. Wonder if any other temple does. I am thinking quite unlikely. https://byustudies.byu.edu/article/the-nauvoo-temple-bells/ Edited January 22, 2022 by Calm
Calm Posted January 22, 2022 Posted January 22, 2022 (edited) I found one exmormon discussion that had a few saying they had been in much older chapels in small town Utah that had bells, one said it was removed when renovated in the 70’s. Looks like Provo Tabernacle had one. https://scblog.lib.byu.edu/2012/06/20/y-bell/ http://www.byhigh.org/History/VictoryBell/HistoryofYBells.html Edited January 22, 2022 by Calm

It's different now with the internet but back in 1973 I wrote a bunch of songs and sent some into a record company. They didn't pick any of them but about nine months later one of my songs wound up on a famous bands album with no credit to me at all. 1
