Garden Girl Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 This evening I saw something that took me back many years to WWII... A commercial on TV for the planting of Victory Gardens... There's a term I haven't heard since the 1940's when I was 4 - 6 years old. There's probably a number of posters on here who can remember back to their childhoods when neighbors would get together and plant the government suggested communal garden where all would tend it and share in the wonderful bounty of fresh produce during the challenging times of the War... these were called Victory Gardens... when I was a child we were extremely poor. My mom was divorced, raising my sister and me on her own... We lived in a really small house that sat back from the street... the space to the street was the size of a vacant lot... so mom invited the neighbors to follow the government call to plant such gardens. I can't begin to tell you how I liked looking out and seeing our neighbors tending the garden... we also had four rows of blackberries and raspberries, and my mom used to make delicious berry cobblers. We had all manner of fresh vegetables and tomatoes. Imagine my surprise just now to see the TV commercial for gardening products urging people to plant "Victory Gardens." Wow.. that was a blast from the past... GG 4

Tacenda Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 Love that memory of yours GG! I drove by one of our community gardens in Davis County and I was amazed at how beautiful it was, they really went beyond what they had before, maybe because people had more time on their hands with the corona virus.
