I don't hold to using legalism for excusing slander.

Requiring the actual word to be used before accusing someone of using the actual word is legalism? Really?

No disparagement meant to your high school (I don't even know which one it is), but I often find the Urban Dictionary to be rather insightful, particularly when it comes to colloquial expression.

I am gobsmacked that you find that source insightful. It’s like consulting LDS Freedom Forum to find out what Mormons are like.

That there is an entry for my high school tells you how seriously to take the Urban  Dictionary.

Is Urban Dictionary written by Incels or something?

Crowdsourced, .I believe.  Just the type of authority that appeals to Scott. ;)

"Urban Dictionary"....you mean the one that is constantly charting changes in the English language?

The Urban Dictionary is not always above reproach, but I often find it to be rather insightful, particularly when it comes to colloquial expression.

Incidentally, as a lexophile**, I like to consult a variety of dictionaries.

 **Look it up; it's clean.

I am genuinely shocked that you consider it a legitimate source.

I’ve seen the video multiple times  and laughed but on this topic, on this thread the misogynistic nature of it just made me feel sick. Like, is this how the Bishop feels when I raise concerns about the Primary...”oh, just shake your head and nod because irrational Sister so and has a concern again.” I guess this is why I vent on an anonymous message board instead of raising my concerns to my Stake or Priesthood leaders.

I don’t believe they will take me seriously and that they may tie it to the strength of my testimony.

I shared the sick feeling as I saw some men giggling over it. They weren't only laughing at the video, they were laughing at women.

The one that is basically a free-for-all for whatever a contributor wants to put in. See my high school’s entry for an idea of how seriously to take it. Here’s the “top entry”:

Calabasas High School

A disgustingly rich, stuck-up high school swampedwith spoiled, drug addicted, and self-absorbed children. Most people at Calabasas High School are completely oblivious of their wealth and fortune. The males have highly egocentric tendencies, while the femals are always willing to exploit themselves. Calabasas also boasts one of the worst football teams in America, due to the fact that the school is almost exclusivley white. If you want your children to become cultured and world-conscious, Do NOT send them to Calabasas High School.

Oh, I got expelled from Agoura so my parents made me go to Calabasas High School. Worst mistake of my life. I'm transferring to El Camino next semester.

I couldn't link to the "they" definition page because of its "colloquialisms".

You can call someone "a builder of stringed musical instruments generally consisting of a neck and a sound box," or you can call him a luthier. The meaning is the same.

So that is a definite yes.

Incels who hate my high school, perhaps?

Incels hate everyone and everything, including themselves.

I would love it if discussion of Gui’s   Law could be ignored on this thread...

You are the OP,  you can report it and have the derails removed.

Crowd sourcing has its virtues.

I admit to being quite surprised by this side of you given your expressed distaste for some popular language evolutions.

And I would love it if slandering someone for defending modesty would be considered grounds for thread closure -- as with Godwin's Law.

Anyone can report it.

But I fail to see how it is a derail in a thread about modesty. Here it is again:

Quote

Gui's Law: In an online discussion of modesty, the probability that a defender of modesty is called a pervert approaches 1.

I think this whole thread is a debate over what is defending modesty and what is shredding it to pieces.  As far as .I am reading things, everyone considers themselves the defender.

I admit to being quite surprised that you think I deny or am opposed to the evolution of language. I just don't like it when it is unrestrained.

Probably not. Hopefully not.

Unless you are incredibly irrational. I don't mean that in a misogynistic way. Many people (men and women) share concerns with my Bishop that are....well.....bonkers. I try to show patience with one of the people who does this as I am beginning to wonder if they suffer from paranoid schizophrenia. It would explain a lot.
