new General Authority?

My guess — and it’s only a guess — is that he works so closely with the First Presidency that they felt he needed to have line authority due to the nature of some of his duties.

Moreover, he often accompanies them in their ecclesiastical travel. Now it will be handy to be able to call on him to speak, conduct meetings, set apart newly called stake leaders, etc.

No doubt He will do a fine job, he has necessary qualifications of banking and finance degree ☺️

I was thinking there seems to be a line of others who were Secretaries to be called as a GA, Rulon Craven, Joseph Anderson, F. Michael Watson, Francis Gibbons and now Elder Hales. Mind you Arthur Haycock wasn't as i'm sure others but it seems to be a prime picking spot!

No change in role or responsibilities. But does now get get a stipend and perhaps a get out of jail free card. At least he’ll now keep the more detailed statistics secret sacred. But what do I know, I’m just a cynic...

Even cynics can make marginal gains, if they work at it.

That's a big IF that's not happening in this case.

What new responsibilities?

It doesn't say. I just mentioned it because it was said earlier in this thread that his responsibilities didn't change. But it sounds like in addition to his secretary role that he got new responsibilities that go along with being a Seventy. Probably given the sealing power. May have stake conference assignments. Assignments to speak in general conference from time to time. Possibly more.

Exactly.

Lol. I brought it up because it mentions he has new responsibilities in addition to his prior one. Me not know the precise details of the new responsibilities doesn't mean they don't exist. But there are certain things that we know go along with being a general authority.

The difference, of course, is that none of these men served as General Authorities while they were serving as secretary to the First Presidency.

no, but they were picked after and that was   prime hunting ground for someone to serve as a General Authority.  I , personally would be nervous to get that secretary position after the previous one was picked, I, personally, would start smoking big fat cigars to ensure that I wasn't ever called😝

So, he continues to do the same thing, but now he doesnt get "paid", he now collects the tax free $120,000+ stipend.  I think Bro. Hales will make a fine GA.  I do wonder if there is something to this other than revelation.

According to the leaked pay stub, they pay taxes...at least they have them withheld, which  would be silly if they didn't pay any.  Withholding taxes were a little over 9% gross income.

I thought Michael Watson served as both for a while. Wait, maybe not, but something back then made me think there was at least some overlap.

No. We worked quite frequently with him when he was secretary to the First Presidency. Then, either upon his retirement or soon thereafter, he became a General Authority seventy and, as I recall, was sent abroad.

Edited to add: His Wikipedia entry confirms he served "until his call as a general authority of the LDS Church in 2008."

See my prior post that you didn't like that mentions some of it.

Yeah, that's also where I corrected myself. I don't claim to know too much about it. I just remember when he was called as a Seventy and I didn't personally see anywhere stating that he was released as secretary.

What do you mean by “the sealing power” and why do you think he doesn’t already have it?
