Eddy Martin April 20,1973 "I went to the Salt Lake temple to do initiatory ordinances and stayed for the 8 AM endowment session. This was such a large session it was divided into A and B sections. I was in the A and Sarah in the B. There were 45 marriages so I had to wait in the outer lobby for Sarah for 2 hours. As I waited I heard an elderly man tell his young companion, an elder, this story. “When I was a young man I was appointed leader of my elder’s quorum. In those days, the presidencies of the Elder’s Quorums in the salt lake area were invited to meet each week in the Elder’s Room in the temple. Usually an apostle was in charge of the meeting. One day, elder James E. Talmage was presiding. After opening exercises, he invited us into a corridor to hear his testimony. He stood in front of a door and said, “This is the room where I wrote my book, ‘Jesus the Christ.’ One day I became so discouraged that I brought my suitcase and put all my notes and personal items in it, closed it, and started out the door. I felt a hand on my shoulder, and turning, I saw a man. He asked, “What are you doing?” “I’m frustrated,” replied Elder Talmage, “and I’ve made so many errors I am taking my notes home to destroy them.” “No,” replied the personage, “there are errors in the Bible and other books, but this is the most perfect book any man has ever written about me. You must finish it.” This story smells bogus to me. When I was doing my story on the 100th anniversary of Jesus the Christ, I never came across this. There was nothing spectacular about his doing the work in the temple. It was just a place where he could get away from the press of duties and appointments. 1

Which means that at any giving time the living prophet can be wrong on any subject and we are just waiting for the next living prophet to correct him. See the problem? At some point we have to know something is true and not subject to correction.
