Garden Girl Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 (edited) Hello all... Just a few words about the impending eclipse on Aug 21... and wondering if any other cities or areas are preparing... Here on the central Oregon coast we are right in the throes of preparing for an influx of 100,000+ visitors... estimates go up to 200,000... Here is info I received in the mail on a flyer from the city of Depoe Bay... "Don't be in the dark about being in the dark: On the morning of August 21st of this year, there will be a total solar eclipse. It will begin its path over the United States at Lincoln Beach...(this is where I live)... at approximately 9:00 a.m. Shortly after 10:00 a.m., we will be plunged into total darkness for about two minutes." The flyer continues... "Estimates suggest there could be hundreds of thousands of people in the Depoe Bay area... (a town 5 miles south of me)... for a few days before, during, and after the event; far more than the city can comfortably accommodate. There will be crowds at viewing sites, vehicles illegally parked, excessive water and power use, traffic halting on city streets and on Hwy 101. Internet, ATM, credit/debit card use, and cell phone access may be impacted for several days." This is not much ado about nothing for this area... during summer months our visitors swell our numbers to bursting... even at Church we have to open the Cultural Hall clear to the back and set up every folding chair available... our Sunday attendance increases from about 150+ to up to 400+... of course the local businesses count on these summer visitors for the $$, which will help sustain them through the lean winter months. So, if you take our regular summer numbers and add even 50,000+ to 100,000+ additional visitors and you can see how our normal towns of 6,000 to 7,500 will be impacted... My friends from Church who work at the hospital, police, and fire depts are very serious about this. I understand the hotels/motels, etc are booked already and for increased prices. The city had to warn them about gouging... (I could probably make a good $$ by renting out a room)... The cities of Lincoln City and Depoe Bay have developed plans to open up areas for camping, with extra port-a-potties, and finding areas for increased parking. We are warned to "shop for and store extra food, water, pet food, household supplies, prescriptions... Fill gas tanks... purchase extra batteries, propane for camp stoves, charge laptops, cell phones, tablets, etc... " And to try and stay off the roads as much as possible... and make emergency or alternate plans for getting to/from work... Anyway, there's a buzz of activity and planning going on... Buckeye Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 A year ago, I booked a hotel in Kentucky which is the closest point for me. My family will be near Mammoth caves NP. 1
Robert F. Smith Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 I have relatives coming from Virginia to see it in Idaho, but someone can see it from Adam-ondhi-Ahman in Missouri, if they so desire. 1

FWIW, you can also see the eclipse from the Tetons and the Smokey Mountains (weather permitting). I must say this one cuts a pretty cool arc. Also, in two years there will be another eclipse running from texas to canada. The cross-point between the two is somewhere in Missouri (I believe). Again, keep this news away from the crazies.

Tacenda Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 And the Rainbow Family group appears to be setting up camp there in July. http://www.ktvz.com/news/police-rainbow-family-plans-nearby-national-gathering/543919027 Some of them intend on staying for the eclipse in August. I remember when they set up camp in Heber, Utah a few years ago. Here is some news about it, people were concerned. http://fox13now.com/2014/06/17/rainbow-family-has-arrived-in-wasatch-county/ Just a heads up Garden Girl. Kind of wish I knew sooner I would have reserved Moolack Shores again. I'm sure it's been booked by now.

I'm sure our area will be greatly affected from numerous sources. That's why so much planning has been going on... and yes, Moolack Shores is undoubtedly booked... GG
Stargazer Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 I've been planning to attend the eclipse in Baker City, Oregon, but didn't take the precaution of reserving a hotel room. So it's all taken. Months ago. Nevertheless, my wife and I will be somewhere around there on the day. Assuming the traffic will let us! 1
