The deathbed makes that very hard. God can forgive whom he wants, but to wait till that last breath probably isn't the best course of action. What we've became rises with us to be judged by God. It is definitely not the best course of action and anyone who plans for a deathbed repentance and is still in the mindset that waiting for the end would save them won't get much help from it. A way to tell if deathbed repentance is sincere is if the person were miraculously healed what would they do? Usually we do not get the chance to check though. Edited May 7, 2017 by The Nehor

What would be a real life example of someone who has that mentality? I think real world examples, from Moroni's point of view, would probably be atheists who used to be believers and people who embrace sinful lifestyles knowing that it's sinful. I think that in Moroni's way of thinking, embracing doubts, or embracing a lifestyle that a person knows is not God's will (both of which can and do lead to a loss in hope of Christ and the Atonement) is sinful and ultimately causes despair. 2

I know that's one of the LOF three things that are necessary for a person to exercise faith in God, but if you feel so down on yourself or hard on yourself you could easily think, well, I don't know if I am living the way God wants me to so why bother trying, i've tried before and it didn't work or something like that? or is like an apathetic perspective like I don't really care anymore about God's way or wanting to be a holy person. I have heard if you think you're crazy you probably aren't but the ones to worry about are the ones that can do some horrible calamity and sleep at night , if this makes sense!
Kenngo1969 Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 (edited) Duncan: I think this address, by the incomparable, inimitable, in-quite-a-few-other-adjectives-I-could-add Elder Jeffrey R. Holland speaks to your question. I like what he has to say under Section 1, "Everyone Faces Trying Times," especially. https://speeches.byu.edu/talks/jeffrey-r-holland_lessons-liberty-jail/ Best to you, Sir. A Brother in Christ, -Kenny G. P.S.: I just read your reply our estimable Sister, Bluebell, above. I'm not sure I really have an answer to your question. I, too, struggle to discern God's unique will for me, to carry it out, and (perhaps most importantly), to discern that I am carrying it out. The only thing I can say is that, long ago, I gave up on the idea that God is Santa Claus who gives "presents" to His "good" children and "lumps of coal" to His not-so-good children. I may simply be deluding myself, but one answer I've come to in my struggle to answer such questions is that, since the struggle to discern and to carry out God's unique will for each of us is so common, it, alone cannot be seen as a sign of God's disfavor. It's simply part-and-parcel of living in a fallen world. I have simply determined to not allow what I do know to be held hostage by the many things I do not know (like Nephi, "I know not the meaning of all things. Nevertheless, I know that [God] loveth His children" (1 Nephi 11:17)). I was thinking more about people who live lives of sin that know it's not right but for whatever reason don't want to stop. People who's lives involve drugs or premarital sex or greed, etc. 1
