The real question here is "is Jesus God?"

According to the scriptures, particularly the BoM and the D&C, the answer is yes he is.

Therefore "as man is God (Jesus) once was" is true because Jesus lived as a man just like us. "As God (Jesus) is man may become" is also true because we will be resurrected and become joint heirs with Christ.

Therefore the couplet is true.

Yeah, but that's NOT what Lorenzo Snow meant.  He was clearly referring to the KFD.

Of course you are welcome to believe whatever you like, but such evangelical notions of God are precisely what Joseph worked so hard to overcome.

Jesus being God is an evangelical notion?

You might be right but it isn't exclusive to them. It's an LDS notion too..
