If The Church Made Statues To Honor Non-Lds Friends Of The Church, Who Would You Nominate?

I daresay he won over the equally-hard-bitten, if not harder-bitten, Larry King. ;):D

I've always loved that quote. A delightful instance of good-natured thrust and parry. Both of them good and well-trained communicators (Wallace and President Hinckley, I mean), and both from essentially the same generation, they were very well matched.

Yeh, a Jew and a Mormon.

How about Satan? Sounds strange at first, I think, but Brigham said some things about how important he is to our education here and how we all need soneone like him to "help" us know the difference between right and wrong. All we need to do is the opposite of what he would do.

........................................................

More realistically, how about Trey Parker, Matt Stone (South Park), and Robert Lopez, who have made "The Book of Mormon" one of the greatest all-time hits on Broadway.  The LDS Church puts ads in the playbill, and at each venue, LDS missionaries hand out plenty of literature and free Books of Mormon.  These guys are hastening the work . . .

Yeah.  That's what's happening.  Sure.  It's like the Mormon "Fiddler on the Roof", right?

Compared to the bulk of Parker and Stone's parodies, they have actually been kind to the Mormons. Theyoke fun at us, but always note our underlying goodness. It's a funny relationship.

Probably would confuse a lot of people, though, so just forget that I mentioned him.

Besides, not many people know what he looks like.

In the spirit of opposition in all things--any critic. They only make us better.

Well then, maybe John Dehlin. (mormon no more ) Just about every 4th topic is about him anyways,  so everyone MUST be fascinated with him.

Can the Leo Tolstoy quote Elder Richards had in "Marvelous Work and a Wonder" be documented beyond that book (i.e., where did LeGrand Richards get it?)? Something along the lines of if the Church can survive to the third and fourth generation, it will become a force that will change the world.

I don't remember that quote specifically, but I'm pretty sure any time you see the words "LeGrand Richards" and "documented" in a question, the answer is "no".

Why don't we just commission the Church to make a statue of every non-LDS in the world honoring them for being such good friends to us. Such an act of brotherly kindness will do wonders that will exceed the work the missionaries have done for the past 20 years. We can stick them out in the area west of Great Salt Lake. Maybe line the freeway on your way to Nevada. There ain't nothing but desolation to see out that way anyway.

As a graven image maker put out of work by those noxious Ten Commandments I approve of this project.

Put a plaque on there that reads "he's done more for the salvation of mankind save Jesus only, if Jesus were real", set it up right near Temple Square and we'll get a flood back into the Church we haven't seen since the days of Alma. I don't think there is anything that would please his followers more than that (yeah I was bored enough last week to play his tribute to myself podcast wherein a bunch of his followers praised him like they were worshipping Jesus at a Pentecostal megachurch).

The quote is second-hand and anecdotal.

It is included in this Dialogue article which cites Thomas J. Yates, "Count Tolstoy and the 'American Religion,' Improvement Era, February 1999. as the source.

Join the Church, you get your old statue?

I'd consider getting myself and my family exed if I could get statues of my whole family. They'd make nice lawn decorations around the pond and I could dress them up for Christmas.

As long as I didn't have to give them back after I joined the Church, again.

With a sense of humor like that you should already be married. Go meet more women!

Jan Shipps perhaps?

I only date women over 30 years older then me if they are incredibly wealthy and looked hot when younger as a taste test of the resurrection. Not sure if she meets those qualifications. ;)

Well if he's out, I guess Gov Boggs is out as well. :( Hate when that happens! :)

At your age beggers can't be choosers - I would take what I can get.

I remember reading "The Carthage Conspiracy" several years ago and was impressed with the jack-mormon Sheriff Minor R. Deming who appears to have acted honorably in the aftermath of the martyrdom. I can't imagine the pressure he must have been under when he tried to have justice served upon the murderers. I think he even killed a man who attacked him in a fit of rage and later died in prison awaiting trial. I would think that he would rank up pretty high as a non-mormon benefactor especially given the fact that tensions were running high and he placed himself at great personal risk as a matter of principle and the rule of law.

I'd vote for this sheriff that had to round up the murderous mob and doesn't appeared to have shirked his duty.

Yes, a good one.

I might nominate the townspeople of Quincy, Mo., in 1839 -- except that they largely turned against the Mormons after a few years.

The same might be said of the citizens of Clay County in 1833.

No statues for Professor Shipps unless we build a library for her first to place it in front of.
