Oh good grief. Everyone knows Mormon missionaries are supposed to be clean shaven.

It was just a matter of time before something like this would come out.

Is this Missionary or something? All I had to see was it was directed by a guy who does horror films...no thanks.

Yes, it is. It would appear the attempts we make to enter the mainstream of society through the arts and media

will continue to attract counter moves by folks like this and "Book of Mormon." Their response, however, seems

to always come in the form of mockery and extreme vulgarity. I suppose a response would be, "Any publicity is good publicity."

We continue to make a purse out of a pig's ear?

The opening song "I'm going home", is strangely appropriate.  This is a piece of nastiness, and it steals part of the plot from Witness.

In reality missionaries screw up.  But the idea of a full blown affair with a serving Elder is so far fetched given mission rules on being alone with others that it's preposterous.

I'm embarrassed I gave the preview one additional view.

Umm..... An elder on my mission was sent home for conducting a 6 month affair with a married woman.  It's not common, but stuff happens.

OH.... and FWIW.... the movie looks terrible.

It goes far beyond an affair....he proves to by psychotic, threatening and then abusing the husband, his companion, the kid, the dog, the wife. It would appear the victims, he, and his companion have

no contact with the bishop, the district or zone leaders, the mission president, the police, the ward members,  the missionaries' parents. Kind of along the lines of the demonic Catholic priest or demented Protestant minister horror movies.

And to make matters worse, he always has a couple days' stubble on his face. Now that is just inexcusable and justification for anyone to be sent home.

Mine too. In fact, in my mission everyone knew that someone has messed up because President would make us all read a talk about how we are responsible to report on one another.

I didn’t realized this post was here and went ahead a posted my own entry about this say issue. My mistake for not looking at the board better.

I am offended by the movie “Missionary” because it makes a Mormon missionary out to be a mentally unstable stalker. I am not a Mormon, but have intentionally welcomed Mormon missionaries to my door and have met with them at meeting house blocks from my home. I have never had any strange or concerning experiences with them or any Mormon. If anything, I had have a wonderful and informative time. This is how I have some as friends now. This movie is stereotypical and bias ignorance I find offensive. Non-Mormons do not need to be putting this junk out there just because they don’t believe in the same things.

The one thing that the Mormon missionaries have graced me with is the kindness and friendship of good people. That is always a plus and blessing to me. Plus, I am really huge on family and this is also something they gave me a wonderful impression of.

I'll cross-post what I said in that thread:

I am not offended.

I don't think it is reinforcing a stereotype. Then again I have never met anyone who stereotypes Mormon missionaries as creepy possessive stalkers bent on seducing women and forcing her to be his forever using his religion to commit unspeakable crimes. It is playing against type. It is like a story about a coach who abducts players or a doctor who vivisects them. While it works as a thriller most people will not walk out afraid of doctors or coaches.

Well, for me, I am so offended that I posted about this movie in a Non-Mormon Christian group I belong to on line to protest the duplication of the Mormon missionary role in this movie. I wanted to express to others that just because you don’t agree with someone’s believes in faith, you don’t need to show them in false lights. That is not how we do it in any faith. I am offended by this movie and maybe it’s just me, but I tend to speak up when I feel offended.

But does he wear a white shirt, tie and name tag?

You are kind to defend those whose beliefs differ from you.

If you can believe it he took all three off while conducting the illicit affair. The horror.....

As to those who say an affair with a woman on a mission is preposterous I know one elder who,got away with it for at least four months. I have no idea how long he got away with it before I became his companion.

I am pretty sure I will not watch this, but it does not offend me. There have been lots of movies about crazy priests, or evangelicals, so why not Mormons too. From the preview it looks to me that it is not about the church or its doctrine, it is about one missionary with mental issues. They show the concerned companion trying to help.

full disclosure: I have had my name removed from the church records. I did serve an honorable mission and even though I don't believe any of it now, I look at my mission in a mostly positive light.

Because wrong is wrong and we should never reply to a wrong with another wrong or try to justify a wrong. Just because one does something wrong doesn't give justice to a balance of doing another equal or similar wrong. Wrong should be confronted with calm, respectful desires to correct it, not equal it.

Oh for crying out loud, it is a stupid movie. There have been lots of stupid movies before and there will be lots more to come.  If they made some movie about a group of LDS missionaries doing blood sacrifices or something like that then I could see getting upset.

An LDS missionary becoming infatuated with a women, having an affair with her and then stalking her after she cuts it off, is not outside the realms of reality.

I'm thinking of starting a thread expressing my displeasure at all the type-casting and misrepresentation of Vampires recently. Their society is unhappy at the way they are portrayed and want it to stop.

When I was a missionary in Argentina, one of my companions was sneaking out to have an illicit union with a woman who was engaged to marry somebody else.  My companion was quite sure that God wanted him to be with this woman.  When the fiance found out (which was about the same time I found out), all hell broke lose, with levels of tension not unlike what was shown in the movie trailer.  Of course the situation then came to an abrupt hault because of the intervention of the mission president.

Missionaries have been getting in trouble with married women since Parley P. Pratt.  These stories aren't typical, but they do happen.

Have any of you watched the TV series Hell of Wheels?  It is about the building of the first transcontinental railroad.  Pretty good show, but oh man what villains they make out of the Mormons in that show!  It was almost comical.

New Mormon Movie???

I'd say it was pretty good and well worth seeing. It's not your typical LDS missionary tool. I can certainly see why enemies of the Church would label it as 'propaganda', but it doesn't lie or mislead, it just teaches. Because it teaches and lays bare all our own foibles and the time wasting we do compared with what we could and should be doing, the unrighteous and hard-hearted will most assuredly be angry after seeing this movie.

Of course I'm speaking of Meet The Mormons...

Sorry, didn't click on the OP link until after I posted. Have not watched the other yet.
