Buzzard Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 They like us less than they like Muslims, Atheists, or members of any other Abrahamc religion. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2014/07/16/for-democrats-mormons-rate-lower-than-muslims-and-atheists/ Wonder if it's the gay marriage thing, feminism, Mitt Romney, Just being a "strict" religion where you can actually get into trouble for doing certain things, or a combination of all these things. Interestingly, while Republicans like us more than non-Christians and atheists, we still are the least well thought of Christians even by Republicans.Apologies in advance to international members of the board who could care less about American politics.
Storm Rider Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 It is interesting to review this data. In a discussion prior to Mitt Romney's first run for President my counsel was if you cannot get the Evangelicals behind you, don't waste your time. We remain a religion that no one really likes or appreciates. Running for national political office for a Mormon is already getting two strikes against you. On the other hand, I don't really care what a politician thinks about me or my church. My reasons for being a LDS have nothing to do with them, their views, or their rejection of me.

The poll results are not surprising as the three most well liked groups are the three most prominent (in numbers) groups in the US.
ERayR Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I wonder how my democratic mormon friends are handling this? They are probably consoling themselves with the knowledge that they have Harry Reid.
Walden Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 No big deal....my atheism is frowned upon by Republicans to a greater extent than your Mormonism is frowned upon by Democrats. Personally, I couldn't care less what Republicans or Democrats think of my personal beliefs regarding God. From my perspective, I think that Democrats/Liberals consider Mormonism to be a sexist, anti-gay religion led almost exclusively at the higher levels by old white guys, a religion with a history of racism and anti-women attitudes (not saying this is reality or fact, but rather, the perception). The church's rather loud and active stance regarding Prop 8, the issue of gays in scouting, etc. makes them an easier target than say the Jehovah's Witnesses.
David T Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I wonder how my democratic mormon friends are handling this? Apparently self-loathing

While close Mormons in the general public are slightly more liked than Muslims.Politics make for strange bedfellows. The other Mormon(Jon Huntsman) in the Primary race for the Republican ticket at least started out pretty well thought of. But along with campaign stumbles he never caught fire with the Republican base.
thesometimesaint Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I wonder how my democratic mormon friends are handling this? While I am a LDS I'm not a member of any political party. People, in and out of the Church, who superimpose their politics on my religion do both a disservice.
BCSpace Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Turns Out That Democrats Really Don't Like Mormons. It's not surprising. Their polices are in conflict with critical LDS doctrines in almost every concievable way; from the plan of salvation, agency, to basic morality. The title of the article is a truism unfortunately some are too afraid to admit. "Our religions are inextricably linked to our politics. Here’s how."

toon Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I wonder how my democratic mormon friends are handling this? I think they recognize that this study doesn't say anything about religious bias per se. Democrats are more inclined to "dislike" conservatives, just as Republicans are more inclined to "dislike" liberals. (Yes, a bit of a simplification.) Mormons are generally perceived as conservative. And it's not just Demorrats that have this perception. The perception is across the board, and has a substantial basis in fact. Find a group that is perceived as liberal, and I suspect Republicans will likely have negative opinions of it.
Nofear Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Be sure to read the source article (not just the WSJ summary). It turns out while on average we are mostly negative, but not so for any one demographic.
Nofear Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 And this comment in the article reflects somewhat poorly on our ability to be identified by others as Mormon:44% of Americans say they know someone who is Mormon, and 38% say they know someone who is Muslim. Mormons constitute about 2% of the U.S. adult population, and Muslims roughly 1%.I take this to be an indictment of sorts, especially given our emphasis on missionary work.
