Standardization- Yuck

I went to Deseret Book today to get scriptures for my youngest, who will be baptized next month. Lo and behold, we no longer have the option of blue, or green, or teal. Instead, in the name of "simplification and standardization", scriptures are now only available in black; brown- and not even a pretty golden brown, but a drab, dirt color; and a color that claims to be burgundy, but instead of the attractive shade they had in the past it's just a darker, slightly more reddish, possibly even uglier shade of brown.

I am so disappointed. And left wondering, were the committee members that picked out the specific shades all colorblind?

The point of limiting choices is to cut down on costs. So we were informed when they first eliminated the mid range quality and went from five colours to four. Not surprised they went to three now.

You might if you haven't already bought them check out the prices on lds.org...though with name engraving it may be cheaper to get them through DB. Been too long since I worked at a church bookstore to know current price comparisons.

Since Church Distribution tries to keep prices down as much as possible, they don't really sell at wholesale prices to booksellers. When I was working they would give 5% off for picking up rather than shipping, but other than that no benefit so prices at stores would naturally have to be higher for for profit bookstores. My manager claimed we made little to no money off of scriptures even with the higher prices...I had my doubts since they were a big seller but they definitely got people into the store.

When I tried DB it kept bombing on me, but the online store at lds.org worked fine. Just go to scriptures and you can see only three colours offered now. The brown didn't look that bad to me, but it may not have been true to life.

I think we need to follow the Henry Ford color scheme, ' You can have any color you want as long as it is black '.

I am very vanilla; I have always just had black leather covers for scriptures.  

 

As was said above, Traela, just buy a nice tote cover and the actual book cover loses its importance.

if you live in salt lake area, go to Eborn books or Ken Sanders and buy your kid some old scriptures, they are way cooler.

The YW in our last ward made scripture totes easily. For the basic ones they just used a placemat and wide ribbon. Some decorated them with flowers.
