David T Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 (edited) http://www.space.com/25078-universe-inflation-gravitational-waves-discovery.htmlThis is huge. Yet another prediction made nearly 100 years ago of what we would expect to find has shown to be accurate.Oh, and the discoverers, as scientists, invite challenges to their discovery, understanding that this is how things work and get refined. emarkp Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 It's a little more subtle than that. CMB was the smoking gun for the BB. This is the smoking gun for Inflation, which occurred in a tiny time period just after the BB and accounts for the smoothness of the universe. It's pretty amazing, and will probably be a Nobel prize. 1

The key is in "If it holds up". Much more work needs to be done. Truly astounding and outstanding if true.
Bikeemikey Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 The key is in "If it holds up". Much more work needs to be done. Truly astounding and outstanding if true.Does it get us closer to space ships with warp drive? If not then I'm very disappointed! 3

It's been fascinating seeing the recent discoveries of the evidence confirming important key theories and predictions lately, such as this, and the Higgs Boson.

There have definitely been some quite interesting developments that will adjust focuses in textbooks. 1) A particle that seems consistent with the Higgs Boson (but has values that are tricky to deal with -- another story)2) Symmetry of the Electron -- practically a death stroke for SUSY3) Gravitational Waves from pre-CMB -- a huge stroke of evidence for an early hyper-inflationary epoch of the universe Some very interesting news to pay attention to, certainly.

halconero Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 (edited) I pity those whose lives are not enriched by new knowledge. There is this quote that makes the rounds on reddit. It always makes me smile, and push air through my nose at higher than normal speeds:"In this moment I am euphoric. Not because of some phony god's blessing, but because I am enlightened by my own intelligence." Edited March 18, 2014 by halconero

halconero Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 I'm tired, grumpy, and have been up for the past 36 hours writing two papers and attending lecture. Have mercy!

thesometimesaint Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 No, it doesn't change our lives one single bit. Who knows what it will bring. IE; Who knew what would come when Ben Franklin was playing with his kite?
Rob Osborn Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 It would be quite interesting if this 13 year old proves the big bang theory false- http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2011/03/25/a-beautiful-mind-12-year-old-boy-genius-sets-out-to-disprove-big-bang/
