Pres Uchtdorf At Church History Symposium: Our 'leaf' Is Not All There Is To Know

I wonder at times if some people really think about what they are saying.

 

Probably not. It's was probably just bad articulation of a different intended message.

President Uchtdorf gave one of the keynote addresses at the Church History Symposium on Friday.

There's no official transcript but here's as much as I've been able to glean from 3 different online sources. I can't vouch for accuracy, it's what has been reported to have been said. I also don't know if it's in the right order. But it's still worth reading :)

I can't speak for the other two, but the Deseret News report is mine, and you can take it to the bank! ;)

 

I am preparing a longer report that will be in the Church News this weekend but, of course, it won't be a transcript.

 

President Uchtdorf gave a keynote for the Church History Symposium sponsored by BYU and the Church History Department. Typically, the proceedings of the annual symposium are published in book form that appears a couple of years after the event. Presumably, President Uchtdorf's complete address will appear in that book.

 

I just noticed today on the Mormon Defamation Board that someone started a thread regarding President Uchtdorf's talk. As is the modus operandi for the Church's antagonists, they took a segment out of context and distorted it.

 

The quote they cited was this:

 

There will be times when it may appear that things are going badly for the truth of God -- the evidence of the world contradicts God's utterances.

 

They distorted this into an admission that the teachings of the Church are untenable in the face of secular arguments against them.

 

Of course, they ignored and neglected what President Uchtdorf went on to say:

 

For my part, I have learned to be patient, knowing that in the end things will work out. God's Kingdom will continue to grow. The truth will continue to flourish and spread throughout the earth. Sometimes all it takes is a little faith and a little patience. Things which may appear impossible now may become matter-of-fact in years to come.

 

The overall message of course, is that the truths taught by the Church of Jesus Christ are indeed sustainable, and that will ultimately become obvious if one has the patience to wait for it.

 

The story President Uchtdorf told of Frederick the Great was by way of illustrating that message: "I suggest you wait for a week. Then, if things are still going badly, we will quit together."

That takes a special kind of talent to purposely leave out a statement that directly contradicts the point you are trying to make.

I just finished my Church News piece. I included far more of the talk than I was able to due to space constraints in the Deseret News article (which also included coverage of Terryl Givens's keynote the night before).

I really hope it gets a wider audience than just in a book form. If not, I'll look out for it. President Uchtdorf has a wonderful way with words and an apparent empathy for the range of perspectives in Mormondom while personally retaining an unwavering conviction of his beliefs.

Out of interest, how are you and the other journalists able to quote so extensively from these addresses? Are you given transcripts in advance or are you just very good at short-hand (or use a handy dictaphone)?

In the case of President Uchtdorf, I worked from an advance copy of the text. (I don't know whether very many other news outlets, if any, are given that privilege. We've developed a trust relationship with the Brethren.)

 

In the case of Givens, I used a digital recorder to capture his talk as he gave it, then I transcribed it before writing my story.

 

Givens might have sent me a copy as well, had I asked. I just didn't get around to it.

I heard the primary president say the following recently in sacrament meeting:

"It's so good to know we have the truth when the rest of the world is following satan."

President Uchtdorf's message of universalism needs to be heard.

Canard, I am not doubting the need for his message or words; quite the opposite. I think it is why we as a people and as a world are not ready for more than the fundamentals. All humans are prone to build rameumptoms at the first chance we get; it just feels so dang good to view ourselves as closer than everyone else to God. Religion does not hold fault except in as much as it encourages such thoughts. 

 

The issue is that each individual must learn truths and each of us are at different points. More importantly, we often must learn and relearn the same truths. We each know the beauty of loving and serving our neighbor, but we often relax into the service of self. It is just easier because our own needs are so easy to identify; they shout in our ears and in our brains what is wanted. To focus on others; to focus first on our Father in Heaven and then his children is how we find lasting happiness. We all know this to be true and yet we all forget the principle when applied to different situations and environments.

Sorry. The trust relationship I spoke of earlier? It's largely dependent upon our not doing so.

Just listened to the video.

 

Scott, why didn't you report on his usage of The Hobbit? THIS IS WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW!  :lol:

 

Seriously, this is amazing.

 

It's been coming on 10 years since he was ordained to the Twelve. Can we PLEASE have a collection of his talks in book form now? My bookshelf needs it.

 Wow. I think there's a few different things going on in that one statement, that can apply just as strongly to opposite spectrums of thought and perspectives within the Church. President Uchtdorf is amazing.

It doesn't apply to me because I know I'm the only human being on the face of the earth who isn't a pedantic fool... :crazy:

President Uchtdorf is seriously able to reach me, edify me, and humble me in a way that surpasses all of the other currently sitting GAs. Seeing also as he was called to the Twelve with the year that I joined the Church, I kind of view him as "My Apostle".
