Pres Uchtdorf At Church History Symposium: Our 'leaf' Is Not All There Is To Know

President Uchtdorf is seriously able to reach me, edify me, and humble me in a way that surpasses all of the other currently sitting GAs. Seeing also as he was called to the Twelve with the year that I joined the Church, I kind of view him as "My Apostle".

Speaking individually. Although how I approach all the GAs, especially those whose sermons or styles have traditionally grated on me,  has been influenced by this post here: Boyd K. Packer and Prophetic Despair.

 

I have made it a quest to read as much as has been written by the current sitting GAs, and any bios they have, and seek to understand their talks in light of their lives, and perspectives. It greatly adds to a charitable reading of them, and helps me at times to translate through the rhetoric that at times masks the message.

 

President Uchtdorf (and President Eyring, President Monson, and Elder Holland at times as well) are those whose messages most resonate with me and edify me without first going through a conscious re-translation/contextualization process.

 

IE, from time to time, I get distracted from an Elder Nelson talk when he goes and takes a swipe at a straw-man of Evolution, or the Big Bang Theory. When I come back to it to learn from the talk, I approach such swipes as a manifestation of his conviction that the world, including the body, is something with a sacred connection to God, and that he is offended when individuals seek to divide or denigrate them. While his rhetorical approach to expressing his conviction may not resonate with me, what I see as the underlying intention does.
