Mola Ram Suda Ram Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 You know, communication is often a 2 way road. And since we cannot hear the other side of the story, which is probably very different than "She is Mormon and the others aren't so I am staying away" as to the reason there has been little contact. It might be quite possible that has nothing to do with religion. It might have to do with religion but perhaps things were said that were offensive and she cut ties. As some one who worked at Guitar Center for a number of years and had many friends I can tell you that Mormons are not taught to stay away from non members. I would have been very lonely there. 1
LittleNipper Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Being a non-Mormon, I have noticed that Mormon missionaries are very reluctant to take any literature that maybe contrary to their own belief structure.
altersteve Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 That's because missionaries are not supposed to read anything not approved by their mission president.
LittleNipper Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 That seems very odd. Christians are allowed; even encouraged to read religious literature of all kinds. That is how an ambassador of the Lord learns what and how the people think and what they believe, so one may be a Jew to the Jew and a Greek to the Greek.
Calm Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 (edited) It is only during the time they are set apart as missionaries in order to help them focus on the work and the Spirit without distractions....which is usually two years or 1 1/2.During that time they are to primarily study the words of God and his prophets. Mola Ram Suda Ram Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 That is most of it but also Missionaries are not there to be converted but to convert. 1
Raingirl Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 That seems very odd. Christians are allowed; even encouraged to read religious literature of all kinds. That is how an ambassador of the Lord learns what and how the people think and what they believe, so one may be a Jew to the Jew and a Greek to the Greek.I would say some Christians are encouraged to do so, but not all.But being on a mission is a different set of circumstances. As Cal said, all reading material during a mission must be approved by the Mission President. The missionaries would not be able to accept any reading material from you, regardless of its' nature.
Garden Girl Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 I would say some Christians are encouraged to do so, but not all.But being on a mission is a different set of circumstances. As Cal said, all reading material during a mission must be approved by the Mission President. The missionaries would not be able to accept any reading material from you, regardless of its' nature.Nor do they watch television or go to movies, no dancing, only uplifting music, etc etc. Like Raingirl says, a mission is an entirely different circumstance... applepansy Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Why are Mormons taught to stay away from non Mormons? Does God only love Mormons?I've never been taught to stay away from Non Mormons. Just the opposite in fact, i.e. missionary effort, reactivate, real friendships, real service, etc. I've never shied away from letting my children play with non Mormon kids. I encouraged the friendships. I'm 56 by the way, so 5+ decades of being raised Mormon. I know there are some members who are guilty of this. It makes me sad. 2
LittleNipper Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I would suggest that the man of God is there to bring people to the Lord and not a religion. And a person cannot be a man of God if his teachings are seriously flawed.
sweetpotatoh Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Why are Mormons taught to stay away from non Mormons? Does God only love Mormons?News to me, and I've been a Mormon all my life. The fact that your allowed to post on this site disproves your theory. 1
Calm Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Nipper, this is the social hall and not the place to dispute doctrine.
altersteve Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 I would suggest that the man of God is there to bring people to the Lord and not a religion. For Latter-day Saints, bringing people to the Church is bringing them to the Lord, since the Church is His.
LittleNipper Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 There is nothing wrong with inviting people to church; however, saying that their church has cornered the market on the Gospel is like saying they own God --- don't you think?
ERayR Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 There is nothing wrong with inviting people to church; however, saying that their church has cornered the market on the Gospel is like saying they own God --- don't you think? Every religion thinks they are the correct one.
3DOP Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 There is nothing wrong with inviting people to church; however, saying that their church has cornered the market on the Gospel is like saying they own God --- don't you think? As it happens, I have lived 57 years without having so much as heard the expression "cornered the market on the Gospel". Until I do, I don't expect to think that anyone thinks they "own God."
Calm Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 (edited) There is nothing wrong with inviting people to church; however, saying that their church has cornered the market on the Gospel is like saying they own God --- don't you think? No (given that no one I know uses the "cornered the market on the Gospel", but "we believe we have the true and only living church in whom the Lord is pleased" and variations on that theme, I am assuming that is what you mean).
