Absurd News Item For Byu...

I think it pertinent to point out that this is not -- nor do I believe it is it intended to be -- a news story in the conventional sense. It appears to be a blog post, comparable to a newspaper column of yesteryear, wherein the columnist, or in this case, the blogger, focuses in on something as grist for commentary that may or may not merit news coverage elsewhere in the same publication.

I realized that, but still see it as ridiculous.  If it had happened across the street from the campus, who would be paying attention?  A vending machine restocking error?  Seriously?

(any sense of dismayed wonder is directed at the reporter who wrote the blog, not at people commenting here).

I cannot imagine how anyone even remotely thinks that an accidental misstocking of a vending machine is news...maybe if it included poisonous items, but simply the difference between caffeinated and uncaffeinated soda?

 

Really, Trib?  Are you that desperate for news fillers that anything will do?  Or is it an attempt to make BYU look weird...not disagreeing with that, but is it news?

 

In case anyone misses the point...this post is not about the misstocking...it is about the choices being made these days about what is news...

I don't know if I would go that far. Even if the point was to make BYU look weird (and I am not saying it was, just that is a possibility), that doesn't necessarily count as "anti".

While I do think Stack has an agenda when it comes to the Church (she writes more in support of the more radical feminist positions, for example), I wouldn't call her an anti.

True this is why I said the media is anti-anything Christian. I did not accuse the SL Trib to be anti-Mormon, just they use them as an easy target since Mormon Headquarters, so it is easier to use us as a target. I in no way think everyone who is opposed to our faith is anti-Mormon. Many follow the "dictates of their own conscience". One thing I have noticed as of last the distain Thant most media outlets go out of their way to attack all who have Christian values.

This is one of the big problems I have with Christians crying "attack on Christianity".  How is this story even remotely anti Christian or anti Mormon.  When you see 99% of every article anti Christian, perhaps you have a really warped sense of what is anti.  Maybe you could explain why this article should be considered anti Mormon or anti Christian.

I believe it always has been. Every year there has been sexual assaults both alcholically motivated and not.

That's my understanding too. I just don't see a reason to promote alcohol use, though anonymous vending machines, amongst the under 21 crowd.

I have a nodding acquaintance with Peggy, and neither would I regard her as anti-

As for the attitude of the newspaper itself toward the Church, well, I saw a column not too long ago written by the newly appointed publisher of the Trib. In essence, he said that in Utah, the Church is a powerful institution, and like any powerful institution, it warrants being viewed with suspicion by a watchdog press.

The comment reminded me of the prophecy in the Doctrine and Covenants that the Church of Jesus Christ would come forth in the latter days clear as the sun, fair as the moon and terrible as an army with banners.
