Greg Prince On Mormonism

Weird, In my interview with Bro. Wilcox, I shared with him many of the things I took away on the subject of Grace and he seemed in agreement.

Maybe you should really give the podcast a chance, it could be enlightening.

Perhaps you will rethink your views on Givens and me as time goes on.

Wilcox is such a nice guy he probably just told you what you were expecting to hear. But his writings seem to demonstrate an understanding of grace which is consistent with the Brethren. Gotta either completely keep the commandments or completely repent to merit god's grace of exaltation, and it has to be done within the priesthood structure. There are no other paths. No nuanced way of faithlessness. I am pretty sure that is what WIlcox says from his youth-oriented writings.

Really who is Greg Prince that I should listen to him?

I believe that he is currently serving as a stake patriarch. But I could be wrong on that one. Other than that, he's a church member like the rest of us. You don't need to listen to him.

But he has published some great works including the biography of President McKay. I think that he's definitely worth listening to if you have any interest in church history during the first half of the 20th century.

Sorry I still do not see the infallibility.

So because you were ill informed it is the Churches fault? Why can't I just once see one of you post: I didn't know that but it was probably that I didn't pay attention or just wasn't looking too deeply. It would be so refreshing to hear just one of you take responsibility for your own ignorance.

Nope, not the church's fault. But I was paying attention. I grew up in the church, was very active, graduated four years of seminary, and graduated from BYU with a very high GPA and (obviously) took all of the required religion classes (and then some). I feel confident that it was not a matter of me not paying attention.

I will accept responsibility for not looking deeply -- I didn't until about my mid-30's.

But I am not interested in pointing fingers and finding blame. I'm more interested in finding solutions to the problem. I think that the new youth curriculum is a good step in the right direction. I hope that we can find more ways to encourage meaningful and open discussion while still making sure that it is faith promoting.

Please don't bold your comments, makes it harder to read, not easier. Assuming this was intentional, if not...ignore.

I'll ignore, sometimes the iPad just does it....

Maybe you are thinking of Richard Bushman (former stake president now serving as patriarch)?

Oops... that's entirely possible that I've confused them. But as I indicated, while I enjoy reading/listening to him because I love his perspective... his area of expertise is really the church during the McKay years.

I lived the McKay years.

Prince's in depth review of church archives and President McKay's diary might be of interest to you then. If not, no big deal.

Bushman is a Stake Patriarch, Prince is not

DB,

I listened to the podcast last night. It was very good. I appreciate how quickly you got to the main points. Thanks again.

You may already know this, but Greg Prince was interviewed just a few weeks ago by another new podcast - exploring sainthood. Below are the links. In that interview he goes into even more detail on "big tent mormonism," or in his words, pluralism.

I'm jealous. I assume he's here for the new Cedar Point ride?

No, Lakeside is a Methodist community. His explanation

I'll be staying with friends there and sponsoring a Chautauqua presentation by Helen Whitney, the PBS producer who did the documentary on the Mormons in 2007. I serve on an advisory committee at Wesley Theological Seminary in DC--the first Mormon ever to do so.

Pretty Cool.
