EllenMaksoud Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Perhaps nothing else needs to be said, other than the title. But, I will say more. We know that certain things like Bi-polar, and Schizophrenia must be treated. However. I think that certain drugs used for Depression and Anxiety are way over prescribed and the use of them post 911 tripled. I also think that the drugs can actually interfere with diagnosis, treatment, and "cure" of certain conditions. ((IE 10) is causing this. I can't start a new paragraph. ) It is my opinion, that love, comforting, and acceptance could make a lot of work by counselors unnessesary. Much
bluebell Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 I know there are a lot of LDS members who are also psychologists, and that the LDS church recognizes that mental illnesses are legitimate illnesses with no shame or reason not to medically treat them.I'm sure that there are times when the treatment is worse than the cure though, and that things are frequently misdiagnosed in that regard, and therefore sometimes overly medicated.

MuchThe Church favors the use of trained professionals in treating physical and psychological disorders. The best therapists use a combination of drugs, which make a person feel normal, long enough for the cognitive therapy to take hold.Everyone gets the Blues. However Clinical Depression is different, and if left untreated may result in early death.Anxiety Disorders are common, and usually respond well to just cognitive therapy alone. Less common with Anxiety Disorders is the use of mild mood altering drugs.Love, comforting, acceptance are basic human needs. But sometimes they are just not enough. Thus the need for trained professionals to help us over the really rough spots.
Mark Beesley Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 LDS Family Services hires psychologists. BYU has a psychology department. So far as I am aware, the "Church" has no stated position on any facet of psychology. 2
EllenMaksoud Posted March 21, 2013 Author Posted March 21, 2013 There are class action law suits regarding the use of certain medications. One it seems caused massive weight gain, and the other actually exacerbated a condition the person had been dealing with, without the use of medication all their life. The individual is not interested in litigation but is just trying to be heard so that these same things do not happen to someone else in the future.I personally am aware that different psychological groups have different agendas, and some of these people inflict a lot of harm in counseling those in need of help to do things that have devastating effects in their lives, but serve those with agendas.
Calm Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 (edited) Love, comforting, acceptance are basic human needs. But sometimes they are just not enough. And sometimes the lack of them is what is causing the issues to begin with and the individual does not have the skill or ability to find associations that can supply them with such at that point. MuchFor the best treatment(s) the service provider should be able to distinuguish between our brain and our mind/spirit. People who think they're all the same thing can't always get at the root of the problem, to begin with, and they don't always know what is needed to make the "patient" better, either. Our problems aren't always related to making good moral decisions to reduce stress and feel at peace in our lives. Sometimes our brains can actually cause a lot of problems for us. Sometimes all we need is a good person to talk to, but at other times we need some medication. And that's all I have to say about that.

There are organizations that are set up to help avoid abuse of clients, but if a client is not proactive about making accusations it can take some time to discover the bad ones. There are medical doctors who cause problems that result legitimately in malpractice suits. However, the overall cost benefit of medicine is still in the positive column. I would say so with psychology as well. Edited March 21, 2013 by calmoriah

But we continue to use and find now ones because the positives outweigh the negatives.

cinepro Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 (edited) As for an "official" view, I can't see anything on the Church website that would indicate the Church feels more or less sympathetic towards "psychology" than the general population. And, like the general population, I suspect LDS tend to be more accepting of "psychology" when it supports our beliefs than when it contradicts them. Edited March 21, 2013 by cinepro

Saints Alive Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 I think you will find that the over-prescription of anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medicine is more due to family and general practice physicians than psychologists (who in most all cases can't prescribe medicine). If anything more people who are using anti-depressants need to be seeing psychologists as well. 1

It was never really a problem in getting the needed meds.
