Calm Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 But if it is just about being exposed to non traditional sexual situations, then watching sitcoms of various types of non traditional families might do the same thing. 2
The Grimace Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Wright said, "Pornography adopts an individualistic, nonjudgmental stance on all kinds of nontraditional sexual behaviors and same-sex marriage attitudes are strongly linked to attitudes about same-sex sex. If people think individuals should be able to decide for themselves whether to have same-sex sex, they will also think that individuals should be able to decide for themselves whether to get married to a partner of the same-sex."
Ahab Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 But if it is just about being exposed to non traditional sexual situations, then watching sitcoms of various types of non traditional families might do the same thing.Yep, Hollywood has led the way for a long time now in helping to shape social acceptance on many issues.Do you watch regular TV now? Have you noticed how gay people and situations are becoming mroe common place now, even to the point of showing people of the same sex having sexual relations with each other? It's not exclusive to computer screens in some back room that hardly gets noticed by other people. It's right there on regular television, and without having to pay money to watch it.My sons stopped watching regular TV quite a while ago and are now watching shows from their own video libraries, and without commercials. My wife and I grew up on more regular TV than they did though and we're having a hard time letting go of it totally, but if it keeps up we'll no longer be tuning in to the regular airwaves. It's just getting worse and worse. 1
RobertAC Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Personally, I'm not against porn. I would not show it to kids, and I would not want a porn shop down the street, but I do not see it being particularly harmful for most adults (although I acknowledge that there are some who are psychologically addicted to it).Porn generally exposes people to sexual situations that they would not usually find themselves in in real life. I could imagine that it would desensitize people to sexual scenarios that they have never considered or that they would otherwise find shocking. Would it make them more pro gay, or supportive of gay marriage? I guess I could see that if people are consuming gay or bisexual videos, but for run-of-the-mill straight porn? I don't see it.
The Grimace Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 It's just getting worse and worse.Or better and better - the study says pornography helps create a less judgmental attitude.
Calm Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Or better and better - the study says pornography helps create a less judgmental attitude.Judgment is not always a bad thing. 3

It is doing that.Satan's agenda is to make evil appear to be good while promoting the idea that as long as people like it, it is okay. Edited February 4, 2013 by Ahab

Calm Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 (edited) I guess I could see that if people are consuming gay or bisexual videos, but for run-of-the-mill straight porn? I don't see it.Porn in and of itself is nontraditional so if exposure to nontraditional scenarios opens up one to thinking in nontraditional ways in general, then it could have that effect. At this point, I would like to see them run comparison studies using nonpornigraphic nontraditional and nonsexual nontraditional relationships and nonrelationship nontraditional scenarios to see if it is just the opening the mind to a new way of thinking or whether it is more tied to actual content. The way the report is presented makes it appear that porn was used not because it was the only valid nontraditional sexual situation available for viewing....because it isn't, but for the headlines that would be created by tying porn to SS marriage. cinepro Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Polygamy is pretty "non-traditional" too; is there any data suggesting that people that practice polygamy are more accepting of homosexuality in others?
Ahab Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Porn in and of itself is nontraditional so if exposure to nontraditional scenarios opens up one to thinking in nontraditional ways in general, then it could have that effect.I can see that as a possibility, but I see ss sexual relationships as more than just nontraditional, but actually involving ss sexual relations. They're just becoming more accepting of what they continue to watch.
Calm Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Polygamy is pretty "non-traditional" too; is there any data suggesting that people that practice polygamy are more accepting of homosexuality in others? It is apparently about watching, not necessarily doing! I suggest SS marriage advocates spamming the airways with repeats of Big Love.

They're just becoming more accepting of what they continue to watch. But the study didn't identify the porn as same sex and in fact the way it was described, it sounds like it wasn't (because it wouldn't be counterintuitive to predict that those who watched same sex relationships would become more accepting of them). If that is really all the study showed, then I pronounce it a total waste of resources.

I doubt that straight men are watching gay male porn or pornography that the straight male would consider gay.
why me Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 "Our study suggests that the more heterosexual men, especially less educated heterosexual men, watch pornography, the more supportive they become of same-sex marriage," Indiana University Assistant Professor Paul Wright told Secrets."http://washingtonexa...article/2520461One reason for this is quite simple. Men tend to also watch lesbian sex on their favorite porn site. This would definitely soften their attitudes toward same sex marriage.
why me Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 I tend to doubt the study. I doubt that straight men are watching gay male porn or pornography that the straight male would consider gay.The men are watching lesbian sex. In fact, porn companies that produce lesbian sex for a male viewer are making a lot of money.

I was just thinking of porn in general and not porn that was restricted to non ss sexual relations, also basing my ideas of watching porn to what I watched when I watched it. I didn't set out to watch any ss sexual relations, but most of what I watched had some of that in it anyway, usually females with females when it did. Even if a male watched only female ss sexual relations when watching any ss relations they might still get the idea that it's okay for males too, though, just because they've already opened themselves to the idea that it's okay between females. And btw, I call them males and females because they're not exactly what I think of as women and men, as they should be. Calm Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 I tend to doubt the study. I doubt that straight men are watching gay male porn or pornography that the straight male would consider gay. That was the point...that watching one form of nontraditional sexual relationships opens one up to being more accepting of other forms.
why me Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Personally, I'm not against porn. I would not show it to kids, and I would not want a porn shop down the street, but I do not see it being particularly harmful for most adults (although I acknowledge that there are some who are psychologically addicted to it).The problem occurs behind the scenes when the filming ends. It is harmful for the actors and actresses involved in the business. Many end up on drugs, low self esteem and quite a few commit suicide. And it is a very exploitative business toward the male and female performers.
DavidB Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Whyme, look at my comment again, particular the last bit of the sentence.
why me Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 But the study didn't identify the porn as same sex and in fact the way it was described, it sounds like it wasn't (because it wouldn't be counterintuitive to predict that those who watched same sex relationships would become more accepting of them). If that is really all the study showed, then I pronounce it a total waste of resources.Men who are addicted to porn tend to watch hetero or lesbian porn. Very few are viewing homosexual porn. The way porn producers produce lesbian porn for the male viewer create a very simple and seductive plot that makes it seem that it is completely natural for two women to have sexual relations. This is what softens their attitude toward same sex marriage and relations, at least for women.
why me Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Whyme, look at my comment again, particular the last bit of the sentence. But straight men are looking at lesbian sex which would soften their attitude. Such companies that produce such films are making a lot of money selling such porn to men. It is extremely popular. Of course hetero males are not particularly fond of gay porn. But for most hetero males, lesbianism would be considered a part of same sex attraction.
Calm Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 (edited) This is what softens their attitude toward same sex marriage and relations, at least for women. This is your assumption. It may or may not be true.If I read the report right (which I didn't the first time around) if they are just looking at men who watch porn in comparison to those who don't, they have only established a correlation not a causation. Unless they did a study measuring before and after viewing porn attitudes, all they have done is shown that men who watch porn are more accepting of SS marriage, not the cause(s) of that acceptance. The authors tapped into National Science Foundation-funded studies of some 500 heterosexual men over the past six years. "Pornography consumption did predict over-time increases in support for same-sex marriage," the duo found.Prediction is not causation. Edited February 4, 2013 by calmoriah
