Damien the Leper Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 No, the articles are aimed primarily at lay Evangelicals. One of the articles is even written by a lay Evangelical (and it shows). The target audience is one of the issues I'm going to address when I finally get to reviewing the papers.Mormons are mentioned a couple times, as are Jehovah's Witnesses and others. The context is just "this is how these 'anti-Trinitarians' interpret this passage."Interesting.
mathonihah Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 CARM's new journal is entitled The Journal for Trinitarian Studies and Apologetics. The first volume is available for sale on Amazon for $6.50 (here). Here are the contents:I've ordered the issue and plan on reviewing it on my blog. I wonder if they would accept an article critical of their theology by a Mormon!

I actually support this project if that is indeed what they are doing. Edited February 7, 2013 by Mola Ram Suda Ram

maklelan Posted February 6, 2013 Author Posted February 6, 2013 You know, one thing I think is interesting is that these articles, at least as far as I can tell, are designed to be geared towards teaching the evangelica point of view to evangelicas. I actually support this project if that is indeed what they are doing.I think this is the main goal of the journal. It is apologetic, but internally apologetic. It is telling Evangelicals "this is what you should believe, and this is how we defend it." Of course, if it hopes to function as any kind of authority, it has a lot of work to do in terms of presentation. The more I read through it, the more shocked I am at the horrendous editing and the horrible layout. I am planning to put a scan or two of some particularly bad editing mistakes on my review. It does not look professional at all in its current form.

Bob Crockett Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 I've ordered the issue and plan on reviewing it on my blog. I would be interested in what they have to say about the johannine comma, or whatever it is called, and in particular Bowman.
maklelan Posted February 7, 2013 Author Posted February 7, 2013 The first installment of my review is up on my blog (here). It's an introduction with some discussion about the layout, editing, tone, and audience. I'll begin with the article reviews in the next installment. 1
Craig in Austin Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Instead of calling us "Anti-Trinitarians", they should label us "Homoousian-phobes" 3

I will message him. I am sure he will share his thoughts. Edited February 7, 2013 by Mola Ram Suda Ram
Mola Ram Suda Ram Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 I would be interested in what they have to say about the johannine comma, or whatever it is called, and in particular Bowman.Rob responded to me and with his permission I can post this comment. The Johannine Comma is not an authentic part of the epistle of 1 John. In my article I list numerous triadic passages in the NT but not 1 John 5:7
boblloyd91 Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 This may be slightly off topic, but I noticed on the cover of their journal there is a VERY Eastern Orthodox picture of Jesus. Kind of interesting since I'm sure CARM probably thinks that the Eastern Orthodox aren't Christians (like Catholics aren't Christian)
cdowis Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 (edited) The first installment of my review is up on my blog (here). It's an introduction with some discussion about the layout, editing, tone, and audience. I'll begin with the article reviews in the next installment. The audience for which it is intended will probably not be concerned about the editing deficiencies. I suspect that it will be corrected in future issues, if there are any. I suspect there is no big budget for this project, and very dependent on outside supporter contributions. When you are through, do you plan to give a summary review on Amazon? Good or bad review, such a review would say "this is something to take seriously". Edited February 9, 2013 by cdowis

mathonihah Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Don't go back, it is a cesspit.I wouldn't say that. There are several Mormons out there doing a good job of answering the critics, me being one of them!
mathonihah Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 If any of this money goes to support CARM or Matt Slick, I would not want to contribute.I have enjoyed participating on that board, and if I could do so anonymously, I wouldn't be averse to donating money towards the running costs.
maklelan Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 The first actual review is taking longer than anticipated. I'm adding a link to a write-up on the notion of deity in the Hebrew Bible. It's too lengthy to put in the body of the review, but I think it's important information. As much time as this is taking, it's actually helping me crystallize some ideas I've had floating around in my head about Jesus and divine agency/identity. 2

Sorry, but never seen anything good from CARM...I feel my mind polluted from ever gone there, I will be happily surprised if it is positive, truly.
maklelan Posted March 9, 2013 Author Posted March 9, 2013 I've posted my first article review from the journal (here). 2
Hamilton Porter Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 (edited) Hmm...wouldn't engaging this subject give readers the false impression that this is even controversial among scholars (when the dominant majority asserts that the Trinity is nowhere found in the NT?) I'm assuming you turned down Oxford because they didn't offer you enough money, so you have a lot of time? Another Oxford vs. Podunk showdown. Edited March 10, 2013 by Hamilton Porter
Bill “Papa” Lee Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 If they stick with defending their own faith, it could be a good thing as it might help educate their own members.Did you mean "stick" or "Slick" ...could not pass this one up.
maklelan Posted March 21, 2013 Author Posted March 21, 2013 If anyone is still interested, the author of the first article I reviewed from the journal has posted a very lengthy response in the comment section of my blog (here).
