The University of Virginia seeks to fill a tenure track faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor level in the Department of Religious Studies. The appointment is the Richard Lyman Bushman Professorship of Mormon Studies and will start August 25, 2013.

Preference will be given to candidates well-grounded in American religious history with a distinguished record of research focused on Mormonism. The teaching commitment is two classes per semester at the undergraduate and graduate level, with at least one course taught in the field of Mormon Studies each academic year.

Do they want someone who has letters after his or her name, or someone who can teach.

From my experience,for many profs,the ability to teach is well down on the list of requirements. Also, it should be noted that ,if you can establish a worthy reputation outside of academia so that a university WANTS you on staff, then there are few barriers ,including the letters after your name,which will hinder your ability to accept a position.

My bro. and sis. in law returned a few months ago from serving their mission at the U. of Virginia, teaching institute classes. But their emails showed they were also in charge of activities for those that attended the classes aand were kept very busy. Fun place to attend or teach college with similar standards as BYU.

And preferably someone who is not overly enamored by the letters behind his/her name. By experience I can tell you it is an accomplishment to earn those letters. However as I have also learned by experience there are many very intelligent and wise people out there without the letters. As you say both are better but if one must choose one or the other its better to have the wisdom than the letters. As a wise man once said A good college education never hurt anyone who was half way smart to start with.

Are you talking about Southern Virginia University or the U. of Va? UVA does not have the same standards as BYU, though they are a good academic school.
