Tacenda Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 As someone who remembers the long lines at gas stations and the number of stations actually closed with no gas, that wasn't actually a bad idea for the time, especially for anyone who required it for their work.They kind of laugh about it now. But they are the reason I have so many large cans of wheat, beans galore, powdered milk, etc. So if the end occurs soon, I'll gladly hand over some cans!

I think I learned to love the idea of gardening from my grandparents, although I didn't do much of it until I got married, myself. I do a lot of gardening now and it reminds me of a lot of good times I had with them. I'm planning to have chickens someday too. Probably not a milk cow, though. I understand that I'd have to milk it every day, twice a day, and there are times when my wife and I like to go away for a vacation, so that wouldn't work for us.

Is there any truth to that and if so, how should we who have a religious obligation to do these things respond?

My sister has always maintained at least a years supply of everything, and I do mean everything. Mill grinder and kitchen sink, the works. But I know myself well enough that if I had a years supply of wheat and dried milk, I'd be tired of whole wheat bread within the first week and dead tired of skim milk after the first month. With hydroponics I could put bean sprouts on my beef jerky. lol

Noble sentiment from many, easy to say when your own children are not starving, now. People know to prepare, even the government has talked about preparedness. People in NY and NJ knew it was coming with Sandy a week ahead of time and many did nothing.My bishop did a survey at church to determine what percentage of the ward had sufficient storage, at best he said 10%. Our responsibilities come to our families first. I have heard people in my own ward say they do not want to do food storage, or that we will just get together at the church and share. Wrong, we are ultimately responsible for ourselves. Sharing with those who have set aside, I am good with, those who have not.....A dose of reality as well, people will kill you for it if they know. They will come back with family and friends. I have spoken with people who went through Katrina and hurricanes in FL, and people will take what they want and abuse it. One man told the story of fending off a group of guys after a hurricane who smelled his food grilling after the hurricane. In NY looters are rampant, people have been guarding their homes with weapons. Have seen little on the news, but more from first had accounts. As a previous practicing criminal attorney, I have seen what people will do in good times. One client beat a blind man's head in with a brick to steal a few dollars.Sentiments of sharing are great, but I can promise, it will not go as planned. The first rule about survival club is not to talk about survival club. The second rule is be able to defend. I have had many tell me that they are coming to my house, just because I am LDS, and they will be sharing with me. Will not happen. Decide what you think is best, but I don't think it will work out like you think it will. This is not only for protecting my family (we all shoot) but also for hunting.A small caliber (.22) can bag a lot of small game (rabbits, pheasants, etc).
