Lately I've found that I love being ridiculed by apostates and other critics. In times past I would get mad or angry. But now it makes my faith and testimony feel candidly alive! Can one be grateful for persecution? I'm with BY on this. Love the history of this church!

Hoover-style or Facebook-style?I don't think there is any evidence that the church surveils or monitors the activities of its former members. I would very highly doubt that. But it does keep membership records, even after the member has resigned. Though we say that we remove people's names from the records of the church, that is technically not true.These records may include accusations and evidence of wrongdoing, and things like whether or not they have had gay sex over a long period of time, or have had transsexual reassignment surgery. If the person wants to re-join the church, these records will be brought out and examined to determine if there is anything in the records that would impede their rejoinder. If there is evidence in their file that they are a apostate, for example, they would be interviewed to determine whether their heretical views had changed. If there is evidence in their file of substance abuse, the former member would be required to show abstinence prior to readmission.

I was thinking of illegal drugs, but actually I'm not sure whether or not illegal drug use (as opposed to sale) is grounds for formal church discipline. I think it can, in some circumstances (see CHI I, 6.1.2).

I would not be surprised if some were to do so.Not organized by the Church. Individual members are free to participate in any activity they want.Thanks, both of you, for the response. I kind of didn't think the church would organize something like that. It would be very odd....but, someone (can't remember who, now) did mention it, as though it might have been, so thought I'd ask. But his letter did have all the trappings of someone who responded emotionally and not with reason. This happens when a person writes during the heat of the moment. But...when the heat inside cools down, something logical can be written after careful reflection and sensitivity.

However there are several books on the Archives. I remember one book where it briefly mentions that the welfare system in the early church was very similar to that of the Mormon church.

It is a record of relevant information related to the resignation and status of a member who has requested to have their name removed from the Church.Removing a name has certain procedures and requirements. Documentation is held to have a record that the procedures were followed, any information related to the member and the nature or circumstances surrounding the request can be noted. This information is held most likely as reference should there be a dispute, legal action, or request for reinstatement at some future date.It has been my observation through years of serving in various positions that those who have had their names removed are generally left alone. Contrary to common exMormon opinion, the Church and leadership don't spend a lot of brain power on former members. There is plenty of good works and service to perform for those who are still members. 2
