However, one Sunday I was sitting in Sacrament meeting and looked down to see my son did not have shoes on, just socks. I asked where his shoes were. He said he left them at a friend's house. I took him home after Sacrament meeting and we found his old dirty play shoes. 1

Life moved at a slower pace and people just didn't seem to feel bound to the hands on the clock. It was quite different from our US, 'driven by business hours' lifestyle and took quite a bit of getting used to.What I find ironic and incongruous is that people will drive breakneck speed across town, putting lives at risk to get through a stale yellow light, and rolling through stop signs, to get to church "in time" so as to avoid the embarrassment of arriving 5 minutes late and disturbing other congregants. Any given Sunday, it's like the Nascar of the minivans... Christians will cut people off in traffic to avoid interrupting the opening hymn.and ...Disagree. I've been late for both (church and movie). However, I will say that if I put my fingernail through my stockings before a movie, I can just pull on jeans. If I do the same before church, and have no other stockings, I have to put together a new outfit with a longer skirt or break out the razor and shaving cream... A lot more goes into my church prep than my movie prep. And heaven forbid the boys start playing ball in the driveway while I'm finishing my makeup. That invariably leads to the last minute scrubbing out of the newly acquired green grass stain on the knee of someone's church pants. Freedom Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Also, another thing that seems uniquely Mormon, other than being late for meetings, Church events, etc, is an obsession with who is always late and using 'lateness' as a measure of spirituality. my experience has been that we do not own these conditions by any stretch of the imagination. All organizations struggle with the notion of xyz standard time, and all organizations deem chronic tardiness as a deficiency of some sort. I often hear my friends talk about catholic standard time.
busybee Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 (edited) MST is alive and well in Ireland too!!! Not so much in South Africa when I was there if I remember corretly. Lots of other things ran on what we called "Africa Time", but church always seemed to start on time. With our without whoever wasn't there.Personally, I think being chronically late is a form of arrogance. It says, " Your time isn't as valuable as mine, you so you can just wait until I get there". I wonder why?We are late for both. It usually has something to do with finding clean socks for 9 people at the same time.I would be one of those people who is 15 minutes early for everything but then my wife would kill me and I'd be early for my own funeral. Who wants that?

Everyone but my husband just wears sandals to avoid your problem. If I could use a transporter, I'd be ten minutes early to everything....and not because of the time saved by not having to drive. Funny, but I didn't notice any General Conference addresses specifically directed to those north of the Arizona state line, east of the Colorado and Wyoming state lines, west of the Nevada state line, and south of the Idaho state line. We have someone in our unit who, even though she is in the building for other meetings,is consistenly late for Branch Council meetings. In fact she is late for absolutely everything and her sons follow suit. And then get really steamed up when the meeting doesn't WAIT for them.

In reality, it's all directed at us.Three months before each conference, the Brethren send out questionairres and do focus groups outside of Utah with the topic "What bugs you most about [Darn] Utah Mormons?" Then they draw their sermons from the responses.
