mercyngrace Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 What are your New Year's traditions?Ours is the meal, of course, consisting of collard greens, black-eyed peas, ham, and corn bread. We also take down the tree on New Year's Day but leave the nativity set up until the magi arrive on January 6th.Do you make resolutions? If so and you don't mind sharing, what are they? Do you set long term goals, short term goals, specific, detail oriented goals you can cross off once completed or goals that can't be easily quantified?Do you find the practice useful, frustrating, meaningful, or silly?
bluebell Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 We don't have any new year's day traditions. It's always been just another day for us, though a lazy one usually, and i didn't realize that other people treated it as a holiday-that's kind of cool!
Duncan Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 New year's dance that ironically really didn't play any dance music...buckets of woe and gushers of sorrow! I have to get in my Kriss Kross and Inspector Gadget techno songs in and I am good! and then Church today in the which I was groggy and certain other people didn't show...so I had to cover for eq after teaching my gospel essentials class and deal with the antics of the missionaries, but all is well now!!!
altersteve Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 (edited) One of my new year's resolutions is to be more childlike. Looking through pictures from my childhood has made me really miss those days, and the other day I (coincidentally?) flipped open my Book of Mormon to a verse that talks about how children are "alive in Christ." So striving to be more childlike, making a conscience effort to be more sensitive to, take notice of, and take pleasure in the small beautiful things in life as a child does, etc., and of course striving to strengthen my faith to become more alive in my Savior, is the main thing I've decided to work on this year. And I mean childlike, not childish. Nominee Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 (edited) My list of resolutions:Bridle my tongueBe slow to angerIf I see someone doing things differently I will talk to them, not about themBe a better motherBe a stronger vessel, mentally/physically/spiritually/emotionally/intellectuallySeek out and do good worksTrustI stayed in with my kids, played Scrabble, screamed "Happy New Year!" and watched God's Army until 2:30am. Then I woke us back up at 8am for Church. We all leaned against one another to stay propped up in our seats and listened to the most awesome talk ever. Life is good. Edited January 2, 2012 by Nominee
oats Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Two years ago I focused on how to give what others needed, as opposed to what I judged was practical, logical or useful. I am a still a terribly bad bad gift giver but there has been a slight improvement of awareness. To build on those thoughts I can't help but notice what I give does not have much impact for various reasons. I've identified bad timing as one reason. I can't help but do things when its optimal according to measures of efficiency, cost, and other things of a practical nature. Sadly the potential impacts are often lost and weeks of effort/work often don't match the positive impact a well timed gift can have.So work on timing. Not very easily quantified. Slow change. I find this useful.
mercyngrace Posted January 2, 2012 Author Posted January 2, 2012 My resolution is to stop making resolutions. I know you've heard that as a humorous one-liner before but I actually mean it sincerely. I'm a list maker, a box checker, a bullet point loving hyper organized planner. Over the years, there have been too many times when I've let my need for efficiency, organization, and practicality come before people. I've gotten much better in the past few years but I've still got a long way to go.
Duncan Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 One resolution i have and I can't do a bloody blooming thing about it but I am hoping they get the Temple in my city approved here this year. The other two Temples that were announced with ours have their sites approved and set to go but we lag behind.
The Nehor Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 I've resolved to stop procrastinating. I haven't taken the time to finish the rest of the list yet.
MorningStar Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I make a resolution not to lose weight. I rule at it. 2
katherine the great Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Our New Year's tradition is usually to go skiing, but....well, Sabbath and lousy snow kinda ruined that! I don't tend to make New Year's resolutions. I make resolutions all year long whenever I make a mistake, so pretty much every day.
