blackstrap Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 I am unaware of any finds in the Americas similar to the dead sea documents ,or any other writings of a religious nature or secular for that matter. I anxiously await such a momentous find.

Kenngo1969 Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 This is, perhaps, only tangentially related to your question (if at all). If so, please forgive the nonrelatedness. We have only brief glimpses of what is on the Brass Plates. It's a gross oversimplification, in my view, to analogize them too closely to our Old Testament. And, of course, the Book of Mormon is an abridgment. It's compilers had to pick-and-choose. Most tantalizing to me, in some instances, is not what they chose to include, but what they had to omit (or what didn't make it in for other reasons). What, exactly, is in the Book of Lehi? Would critics of the Book of Mormon be so quick to dismiss it if the Book of Lehi provided some of the missing pieces which place the Book of Mormon more firmly in a 600 B.C.E. millieu? What, exactly, was written "from time to time" on the Liahona? What did "the finger of God" write on the wall of the temple? Would we be so danged frustrated by the Book of Revelation if Nephi had been allowed to record his entire vision?

It implies that there are specific Lamanite records as well, not many, but that they exist... or at least did exist.Helaman 3:1515 But behold, there are many books and many arecords of every kind, and they have been kept chiefly by the Nephites. nosmelone Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 I suppose portions of the Popul Vu would count or possibly the sacred rock records of the Hopi and other tablets such as the Anasazi tablets of Mesa Verde. I find Nibley's interpretation of the Hopi sacred stones quite interesting. Anyway I would assume there are quite a bit of "other " ancient records to be found that would be included in that "apocrypha" category.

But could be as close as one can get now.Both Michael Coe (based on illustrated ceramics from Mayan tombs) and RIchard Hansen (based on pre-classic murals at El Mirador) have found the Popol Vuh to be pre-Spanish. 1
