Got interrupted watching it (got to go make rescue waffles), so have no clue if this will help (if you want help with it, lol).  Looks like a stunning movie, but not sure I could watch it.

 

It’s a very visually beautiful movie. If you like animals, then it’s incredibly stressful. And it’s the kind of movie where you can’t stop thinking about it because you’re trying to figure out how it all makes sense.

A STAR WARS side story, this movie is great if you are not a STAR WARS purist.  If you are, you may be disappointed.  It takes place after the Empire is destroyed.  Some evil people want the empire to resurrect and they want to be the rulers of it.  The Mandalorian is called in to find one of the really bad guys.  This leads to the continuous round of fighting and meeting new bad guys like the Hutt family.

This is a movie that I would not let my 13 year-old see; it's too violent.  It's definitely not for children.

If you see it, let us know how you like it.  I really liked it a lot.

About 3/4 of the way through the movie, the secretary bird gets sucked up into some weird ball of light situation, goes into the sky, we never see him again. The final scene is the group of animals all stand next to the dying whale after the water all receded and it’s laying in a heap in the middle of the forest.

There are no explanations for ANYTHING.

My step grandson is 4 and he makes the most incredible sounds of animals. It's a guttural sound. He is on the lighter spectrum side of being Autistic, so that may play into it. Mostly dinosaur noises, but recently he did a penguin when we were playing with a stuffy of one and I asked him what a penguin sounds like and he did it and then we listened to a real one, wow, I've no idea how he knows how to do this. It's a gift for sure. They are so realistic sounding. Plus, his mom is really part of why as well. She's very hands on.

Going to have to check into the movie Flow now.

I do! And most just aren't the same when streamed. I'm a Tuesday movie goer lately, it's $5.00 when you're a club member at Cinemark. And for non members, I believe it's not much more. Went to the new Stephen Spielberg movie and I tell ya, when driving home, I felt like I was in the movie. Changed me until next day when I felt normal again, lol. 

The movie I saw was, "Disclosure Day". I did end up liking it a lot. And my poor husband gets roped into going. He's not a big movie buff unless it's a true story.

That happens a lot to me.  You were probably very focused on the movie.  Sometimes very uncomfortable.  Used to be more fun when younger because it didn’t interfere with getting necessary stuff done.

It came out this year and has Rachel McAdams (Mean Girls and the Notebook) and Dylan O’Brien (The Maze runner franchise and Love and Monsters).

Its about a horrible boss and a meek employee who has bad social skills but is very capable (and way into the show Survivor) who get stranded on a tropical island together after their plane crashes into the ocean.

I’m not really recommending it. It’s weird and grossly violent at times. Neither character is likable by the end but you do switch allegiances more than once. There’s no romance, it’s not that kind of movie.  It’s not a comedy either but I don’t know that it qualifies as drama or horror. It has a twist ending.

Its free on Hulu, which is the only reason I watched it.

I went to it when it first came out. I wished it had ended differently, and during it, I was bracing myself a bit.

I had my eyes closed a lot. There were parts of it that were just gross.  And I agree about the ending!  It’s waiting to see how it’s all going to get resolved that keeps you watching, but then I was annoyed when the resolution finally happened.

Supergirl

I was out of town last week and had nothing else to do on my last day, so I went to go see Supergirl. It was just okay - could definitely have been much better. I would have been fine had I waited for it to come out on streaming.

My only hope is that by trying to lean into the edgier, more flawed superhero direction they decided to go with for this film, that it will ultimately pay dividends (in some way) in a future film. But I'm really not counting on that, honestly.

Masters of the Universe

Forgot to mention I saw this as well. My wife was having a girls night over at our house, so I needed to find something to occupy myself with.

I tried going to see it on one of the Cinemark "SCREENX" theaters. For those who have never been, it's basically just a regular movie theater with a couple of extra projectors that cast the image onto the walls adjacent to the primary screen for certain parts of the film. It's supposedly designed to give you a panoramic viewing experience. But, as you can imagine, it's more of a gimmick than a feature, along with their irritating - I mean "immersive" - D-BOX seats (which really just rumble / move / make you angry). The walls don't capture the light well, and they aren't flush with the screen - kind of like a bevel - so it's just not that amazing.

As for the movie itself, if you were a fan of the cartoon as a kid, it was passable. Definitely better than the 80's version, but still just kind of average.

Long? Yes.

Good? Also yes. 

For those who were following some of the pre-release drama over casting, I would say that I wasn't really bothered by any of the choices. Yes, I would have picked someone other than Elliot Page, but he only appears in a couple of scenes: the first, he's just okay in; the second - much better. And while I love Jon Bernthal, I'm not sure I loved him as Menelaus - though I'm very happy he was able to get some good screen time and several lines; I do want to see more of him in the future (absolutely loved him in The Punisher). On the bright side, I thought Charlize Theron as Calypso was a great choice. 

In terms of objectionable content, the film does carry an R rating. There are 2-3 f-bombs (total), and no sexualized nudity at all - you do see a dead man's buttocks at one point, but there's nothing racy.

It's easily Nolan's most visceral / violent film to date. If it were to try and pick an analogous film, it would say it's more Gladiator than 300. Lots of killing, but not lots of gore. 

The only thing that I really didn't like about it - and I don't like any film (or book) that does this - is, towards the end of the feature, we get a bit too much exposition on the moral of the story. That's just one of my biggest personal pet peeves. I hate it when the creator assumes the audience is too dumb to understand their work, so they have to explain it to the audience like they are children.

Then just keep the idiots out of the theater for crying out loud! /rant off

I get your rant! I recently read a book in book club that would have been very sweet, but at the end got a preachy version of that exposition. I was thinking, "do this man's actions not show what you are saying enough?"

Just saw this last night.  I agree with your assessment.  It was funny in parts, and I loved that it didn't take itself too seriously and knew it was cheesy as heck.  But the CGI was a distraction, the dialogue was really bad (not in a good cheesy way), and the story line was way too predictable.  You knew what was going to happen the entire movie.

Casting wonder woman as the sorceress was a weird choice to me as well.  Too distracting.

I did a dumb thing, my husband had to work late and I had bought tickets online and forgot to cancel them. But it's a Cinemark club so I was only out around 11 bucks. I was worried about the violence and it being overwhelming, but still think I'll go another time. Thanks for the review. ETA: it was a Tuesday deal, that's why it's so cheap for the both of us.

Boy, at the Cinemark theaters in my area they don't have that or they do and I was unaware.

You aren't missing out. Their large format displays - which go by the branding XD - are okay, but they aren't the best around.

I think the best mainstream movie experience on the market right now would have to be the Dolby screens at AMC (hands down). They're basically using the best tech available for both projection and sound.

The only time I deviate from an AMC Dolby theater is if there is a show coming out that was filmed on IMAX 70mm. In that case, I'll try to make the trek over to Webb Chapel (here in Dallas), as that's the only true 70mm IMAX theater in the entire Metroplex. All of the other so-called IMAX theaters are really just IMAX branded. They don't actually allow for the full picture to be displayed - which is why those of us in the AV world who tend toward snobbery derisively refer to them as LieMAX.

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die

The premise of the movie is this guy from the future who travels back in time to a random coffee shop and a group of people who he tries to recruit to go on a mission that night to save the world. He keeps traveling back over and over again to the same coffee shop, picking different groups of people trying to find the right combination that will lead to success. When the movie starts, he had already been to the coffee shop 117 times and was trying once more. 

The idea is really good in theory, but I don’t feel like it was executed very well. A lot of it doesn’t make much sense the further into the movie you get. I was disappointed because it has some really good actors in it and seemed like it would be fun if nothing else. It’s free right now on Hulu so you have Hulu you don’t have anything to lose, but I wouldn’t expect much.
