A missionary companion of mine told me that before joining the church, that he dabbled in spiritualism. His parents had opened his home to foreign exchange students, many of them French, and many of them coming with Ouija boards.

His house also was quite haunted, he said. It was large and old, and there was a small reading room off the main corridor that led to the kitchen. It had a bookshelf, a couch and a television, which family members and guests frequently used. It also was used by a spirit they called "George," named after a young teenager who had hung himself in the attic.

Now George didn't appear as a teenager, but as a middle-aged man with glasses, but the name stuck. And one day a new foreign student came to the dinner table after my friend's mother rang the bell, as was the custom. The student, being the last to arrive, looked around the table in some confusion. When asked what was the matter, the student asked, "Isn't the man in the study going to join us?" The family members looked at each other briefly, then my friend's father said to his wife, "Well, do you want to tell him or should I?"

When told, the student retraced his steps back to the room. He was skeptical, but when he saw no one in the room he was stunned. He said the man was reading a book, and though the light was on, no one was seated on the couch.

Later, the student produced a Ouija board and said he wished to try to contact George. Several of his friends had joined them as did my friend and several of his friends. Try as they might, however, the planchette would not spell out anything, but moved seemingly by itself to random letters and numbers.

"Are you angry?" the student asked.

"YES...M...YES...M...M"

"Are you angry at Matt?"

"NO...M...NO...M..."

"Are you angry at Mark?"

"YES...M...YES...M..."

Well, my friend was Mark, and he didn't know what to make of it. So he changed places with the recorder. Now he was out of the circle and watching from the side. He said the planchette was pointing to various letters, but that he began to feel weak and dizzy. He said it was difficult for him to breathe and then, he explained, it felt as though he were falling backwards in his chair.

When he came to, the table chair and board had been overturned. The student and two others were above him, one with a fist drawn back. Mark said his face hurt and he remembered nothing. According to the others, he had stood up and began screaming obscenities at them. He overturned the board, laughing and accusing them of obscene things. Several grabbed him and tried to subdue him, but he threw them off. Finally, the exchange student balled up his fist (apparently he was being choked at the time) and hit Mark in the jaw. Mark lunged at the fellow again and the student hit him again. At some point, Mark slumped to the ground and within moments began to come to. There was more that happened that night and early morning, but this story is sufficient to make the point.

Has anyone else had experiences like this, or with malignant spirits? LDSs believe that "ghosts" are more likely evil spirits pretending to be ghosts, but Joseph Smith indicated that some wicked spirits in this life would choose to remain in the places they were familiar with in this life. Some who have experienced visions or Near Death Experiences (NDEs) have reported seeing spirits who have tried to grasp bottles of liquor or cigarettes, but were unable. Also, in the early days of the church, many of our missionaries had to contend with evil spirits. So if you have any stories, feel free to post!

Ouija boards are dangerous and evil. There is a power there that cannot be explained rationally! I was very skepitkle at first. I always thought them to be a childs board game/ guessing game. When I first saw one at work I thought nothing of it. My firends said come here this will blow you away. I said "ya right". They told me to think of a color and write it down on paper in the next room. I guessed "purple" and the board guessed it right. I said "lucky guess"! They said then to write down any word. I wrote down the word "money" and the board once again guessed it right. We then began a game of just mindless guessing what each others thoughts were- it was kinda cool! And then is when things started getting real freaky! A guy named NZ came into the discussion and wanted the people in the room to do certain favors (mindless tasks) in turn he would tell us our futures and would prove his worth by actually predicting events in our lives over the next few days and even hidden secrets held amongst the group of friends.

This all went on for a few weeks and I was not around that much but had heard they were keeping a journal of the proceedings gleamed from the board. About this same time freak accidents started happening with some of my friends and there was starting to be a feeling of general distaste amongst the friends apparently from the supposed "truth" that the board was saying about some of the friends. It was like two truths mixed in with a lie. So anyway I was over there one night and I was still somewhat speptikle of the whole deal and they said come and put your fingers on the eyepiece and so I obliged. It felt as if one of the other two people were moving it on their own- I was convinced! As I was sitting there arguing my case my exgirlfriend (now my loving wife) and I both had our fingers on the board but away from the eyepiece about 3-4 inches. Suddenly the eyepiece all on its own moved by itself underneath our fingers. Everyone in the room went silent. That was the last time I ever touched one of those boards!

Later on me and my ex got back together and were married- we moved several times and ended up having a son. During one of our unpackings we stumbled across some of the recorded proceedings on the board and there recorded on one of the papers was this chilling bit-

It said that my wife (name witheld) would have a baby boy born to her on xx-xx-xx (date witheld, sorry) and that the father would be me. It was exactly correct! I have long since wondered if things just worked out coincidentally or if there was some kind of spiritual power held within that board and eyepiece!

Needless to say, the house where all these dealings went down had become quite haunted! Everyone of us would hear and see spirits while even some of us would become possessed from time to time- very temporarily. I once woke up in the middle of the night sleeping in the upstairs room and the light was flashing ona nd off and I was being shaken by some unseen force. At that time I was fallen away from the church. Time went by and my brother in law moved into the house and their daughter was sleeping in this same upstairs bedroom. She was very young but always complained about some man that would disturb her who lived in the closet! As things turned out, we found that previously there was some withcraft that had taken place in the house and that there were some witchcraft books hanging out on the shelf in the closet!

By this time we were all convinced that this house and possible people including my niece were possessed! We called my brother who came over and blessed the house and blessed the child. My brother also said to get rid of all the evil works in the house. Ever since then there has been no problems in the house. We are all left with the very real and chilling reminder though that the darkside has actual power that can be felt if you let it!

Those who play with fire run a high risk of being burnt. Those playing fire while covered in gasoline have a bit more coming. The Devil most effectively deceives by seeming legitimate. For example, Moses chapter 4 recounts:

"6 And Satan put it into the heart of the serpent, (for he had drawn away many after him,) and he sought also to beguile Eve, for he knew not the mind of God, wherefore he sought to destroy the world.

Herein, Satan tempted Eve with partial truths. His lie was "Ye shall not surely die;" and his truth was, "For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." The entire statement was inevitably false, yet contained truth.

Usage of a Quija board or any other paranormal divining device or use of familiars is rather directly condemned in the Bible. Keep safely on the side of righteousness and abhor evil and there you will find safety.

Ouija Boards

Almost everyone involved with magick and the occult has played on a ouija board, or at least has seen one. Most people have an opinion about them, those opinions ranging from fervent belief, adamant denial, or the concession that there is 'something' about them. In much of society, at least western cultures, the ouija board carries with it very potent associations with obsession, madness, control, and deception. There is much skepticism and debate, both in the occult underground and society at large, about the nature, purpose, and value of these 'talking' boards. Regardless of your personal beliefs, unless those beliefs have you doing everything you can to avoid them, ouija boards can be made into very powerful magical devices. With the right augmentations and associations, an industrious and skilled practitioner could turn a ouija board into the equivalent of an occult laptop, capable of functioning as a portable ritual space, casting tool, astral gateway, and grimoire.

While the history of ouija boards is dubious at best, and is irrelevant to the creation of this magical device. What is important however, is the socio-cultural empowerment that the boards receive. Contemporary ouija boards, to the best estimation, began as a parlor game, and were marketed as such by the board game industry. Like tarot cards before them, ouija boards were powerful occult tools that became highly commercialized and sold to non-practitioners in high volumes. Again, like the divinations of tarot cards these boards could occasionally be used successfully by the ignorant, contacting entities of varying natures and opening gateways through which multiple levels of reality could merge. Though for the most part these boards either did not function as advertised, were manipulated by the users subconsciously, or were the method in which the gullible were duped by a light-fingered charlatan. Despite all of the horror stories that came from misuse, the disappointment from failure to establish communication, and the predations of charlatans the ouija boards are still in production today. Also, because of its colorful and notorious history, the ouija board still commands the attention, opinions, and therefore energies of many people. Like thought-forms, deities, and ideas these boards gain power from their continued production, use, and infamy. With so many people being in contact with these boards, they have the potential to become powerful tools for the practitioner.

The metaphor of an 'occult laptop' is being used as a visualization for the purpose of communicating the idea, though if the individual using the board finds another visualization to be more effective, by all means use that. The primary reasons for the laptop visualization is that the board lends itself to such a metaphor. The board is thin, lightweight, and portable, much like its mundane counterpart. Using the above spell protocol and occult machine techniques the board can be made into a multifunctional tool that can be used in much the same way as a laptop. The ouija board can be given an onboard energy processor, be used to store spells or protocols, can be used to 'connect' to the subtle realms of reality, and is a tool that one can carry in a backpack or by hand without inconvenience.

One of the features of the ouija board is that it is a portable ritual space. Because of the occult associations held by conceptual reality, the ouija board creates a magical field simply by existing. When a magus pulls out the board and places it herself she has not only created a magical field by using a ouija board, there is the additional empowerment because the intention of the placement of the ouija board was to create a ritual space. So there is not only the power of the intent of the magus, but the power of the board itself as dictated by consensual reality. Another feature of the board is that it can be used as a casting tool. Like a wand, dagger, candle, or any other common casting tool, a ouija board can be used as such. As when it is used as a portable ritual space, the associations held about the power of a ouija board can provide a significant energy source when the board is used to help the caster focus for the casting of a spell. Imagine how disconcerting it might be to an opponent, or significant in the mind of the caster and thus empowering, to lay one hand on the ouija board and point the other at the target.

The ouija board can also be used for what it was intended, as a gateway to the other levels of reality, a portal into the greater multiverse and the subtle realms. While most people use the board in the popular style, by placing hands onto the planchette and allowing an entity to communicate with them through the board, there are other options available to the sorcerer should he or she choose. Depending upon the skill and ability of the practitioner to take and endure journeys of the consciousness into the subtle realms (astral travel), the board can be used in a much more invasive manner. Depending upon the particular technique the individual practitioner uses to gain access to the subtle realms, by employing the ouija board into that routine the magus will gain the energy infusion from the power that the board carries with it in addition to the resonance the board already possesses as a gateway tool in pop-culture.

In addition to being a ritual space, casting tool and gateway, the ouija board can also be used as a grimoire. The magus can cast spells into the board, using it as a storage device. First the magus should cast the spell, then at the moment the spell is leaving the caster, target a specific point on the board, pushing your spell into the board itself. By choosing a specific location on the board, be it one of the letters, numbers, pictures, the yes or no, or the goodbye, the practitioner is able to trap the spell in progress. It should be mentioned at this point that the technique of managing the spell trajectory is very important, in that the spell hitting the board before the target is integral to the success of the spell storage. Once the spell is 'installed' onto the board, the practitioner can wait to use the spell at the most opportune moment. For example, an industrious magus may have several curses bound into the A, the 3, and the Goodbye. When the spells are needed, the magus 'activates' the spell through some personally relevant method (breathing onto the symbol, touching it with a finger, moving the planchette over it and saying a command word, etc), the spell in progress leaves it's stasis inside the board and continues on it path towards the target. In this way a sorcerer could conceivable carry an entire array of spells in progress that only need the touch of a symbol to activate, thus having the potential to cast a multitude of spells in a short amount of time given that the spells have already been cast, and only need to be released.

Another method of using the board as a grimoire or casting devise is to associate each character or image on the board with a particular spell or magical concept. Much like sigil magick, the sorcerer could then mix and match the characters on the board (most likely touching them or using the planchette to activate them in the desired order) to create and cast whatever spell that is desired. Or the magus could simply empower the board to manifest his or her will according to the letters and numbers highlighted by the planchette, simply spelling out what the magus desires, and empowering the board to focus the will to achieve the desired result. The author and some of his associates choose to what they call 'hotwire' their ouija boards by placing stickers, painting, or drawing various sigils and magical symbols or phrases on the backs of their boards to further empower them on a personal level. This technique can also be used to setup wards to prevent other practitioners or entities from taking over the board and using it to their own ends. The use of ouija boards in magical practice can be both effective and stylish."

Friendly or loving spirits can take the time to help us when needed, so there's no problem on that account. Also, while you are right concerning the power evil spirits do or do not have, nevertheless we typically have no conscious idea just how vulnerable we are to them. It seems to always be more than we would think.

When it comes to connecting with spirits or powers unseen, I find the temple endowment most instructive. Even if we are in pursuit of Heavenly Father Himself, we can have evil (or troublesome) spirits make first contact. The Endowment demonstrates this, as well as the proper way of dealing with the occasion, should it arise. It also demonstrates the proper way to establish communication, as well as why we should engage in such activity.

Ouija Boards are silly. They work on the same principle as dowsing rods, namely that we can't keep our hands and arms perfectly still, even when we think they are. These "micromovements" move the object, and since we are not consciously aware that our arms are moving, we attribute the movement to an outside force. These micromovements may also be affected by the participants' knowledge of the question and the likely acceptable answer needed from the board.

You can test this theory. Place the board on the table with the pointer in place, but don't touch it. Then, invoke the proper (or improper) spirits, and plead with them to give you knowledge through the pointer, but still don't touch it. Wait for the spirit to move the pointer. It's not going to move.

As another test, you can formulate a list of 100 or more Yes/No questions for which you don't know the answer (but can find out). Or, have someone make the list, but keep it secret from the people directing the board. Then have the person say "Question 1" (but not actually read the question) and have the users direct to the Yes or No. Record the answer, then do "Question 2". Repeat for all the questions. Ensure that the human participants don't know what the actual questions are. When finished, tally the number of correct and incorrect Yes/No answers. If the game really is being directed by the human participants alone, you would expect about a 50% accuracy from this test. If you get significantly higher in a properly controlled test, then it may be good evidence that an outside (knowledgeable) force is involving itself in the answering process. Be sure to ask enough questions to get a good statistical probability.

There are many other good tests that can be conducted, each of them just as likely to show you that there are no "spirits" or otherwise supernatural forces at play. If you develop a good test and find the results suggest otherwise, there may be a lot of money in it for you.

No, his experience does not satisfy the criteria for many different reasons. Not the least of which is that it is an unverifiable posting on an internet message board.

If even just the test with the guessing of colors could be duplicated with proper controls, then you would have something.

Many many years ago some of my parents friends were messing with Ouiji boards. They would work fine until my dad walked into the roomthen they wouldn't work.

I don't know how they work or what works them but why would any practicing LDS play with something that may summon evil spirits. It doesn't matter if they are conduits for evil spirits or not, why take the chance?

I find it strange that we are having such a discussion in the 21st century. Ouija boards have been thoroughly debunked over and over again. If you believe in them, you might as well believe in lucky rabbit's feet, voodoo dolls and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Here is the one step process for debunking them: blindfold the users.

Back when I was in high school we used the board for seances quite frequently. I noticed when we would use it we would get a strange sensation in our arms, like we could feel someone holding our arms. It's definitely not a good feeling. Also, when we would ask the spirits their names, they would spell out names that sound like something from the Necronomicon, you know, the one's that have two k's in the middle or end with u.

I've always been under the impression that Lucifer and his minions would drag you down to the depths of hell in a heartbeat; no need to play the waiting game until you actually believe in it.

alright, this is totally my own speculation, but it seems probable, from a God-believing perspective, that the laws that govern positive manifestations of the Spirit also govern negative or evil manifestations-one such law being the need for faith.

A few years ago, i watched some show called 'scariest places on earth'-it was one of the very first ones they did. In the show, a family or group of people are sent into supposedly haunted locations, with cameras, night cameras, temperature sensors and heat cameras and such, and they wander around to see what happens. Obviously, it's set up to be as scary as possible.

The episode i saw, one of the first ones as i said, was set in some castle over in the british isles i believe. Anyway, the interesting thing about the show was that, in the beginning, not much was happening-but as the night went on, as the people got more scared, more things started to happen. More doors moving on their own, more temperature changes, more hot or cold spots on beds in the form of bodies, etc.

Looking at it from an outsiders perspective, it really did appear as if the more faith this family put into what they were seeing, the more things they were seeing.

Watching that just got me to thinking, since we know (again, for LDS especially) that satan and his followers have no power but that which we give them, and since, as you said, it is those who seek or fear evil spirits that are affected more by them, that there is some form of 'faith' necessary before they can exhibit their powers.
