Ouija Boards And Evil Spirits

I think the biggest mystery surrounding the Ouija board is how anyone can spell 'ouija' but end pronouncing it 'weegee'. :P

It's a french word...they only use half the letters in any given word.

Apparently, the guy that wrote the french dictionary was paid by the letter in each word ;)

Many many years ago some of my parents friends were messing with Ouiji boards. They would work fine until my dad walked into the roomthen they wouldn't work.
My daughter had the same experience at a slumber party. Her friends were playing with the board and it was going wild and as soon as she walked into the room it froze. They asked her to leave and it started moving again.

I know many people who have opened up the door to evil spirits coming in via the Ouiji board. I won't mess with them. They may be a modern day game board but they have historical context as an occult means of communicating with spirits, and any spirits associated with such are not the good kind.

The board is an inanimate object, made with ordinary materials, and has no special properties to it.

And a house is just stone, mortar . . . and wood.

All the Best!

...the interesting thing about the show was that, in the beginning, not much was happening-but as the night went on, as the people got more scared, more things started to happen. More doors moving on their own, more temperature changes, more hot or cold spots on beds in the form of bodies, etc. ... Watching that just got me to thinking, since we know (again, for LDS especially) that Satan and his followers have no power but that which we give them....

In the early days of the church, spiritual manifestations occurred that caused great confusion. People began having visions and revelations on their own, and were being told all sorts of things they couldn't understand. The Lord condemned many of these saints by saying: "Behold, verily I say unto you, that there are many spirits which are false spirits, which have gone forth in the Earth, deceiving the world. And also Satan hath sought to deceive you, that he might overthrow you. Behold, I, the Lord, have looked upon you, and have seen abominations in the church.... But blessed are they who are faithful and endure, whether in life or in death, for they shall inherit eternal life." (D&C 50)

The Lord went on to condemn deceivers and hypocrites and to explain that, through deception, they give the adversary power. Obedience to the gospel, however, detracts from his power. Each stake that is established in the world and every temple that's built also detracts from the power of the adversary.

The New Testament warns that we're to try the spirits, but it never tells us how. Only by latter-day revelation do we have the keys to try the spirits that deceive: "Wherefore...if you behold a spirit manifested that you cannot understand, and you receive not that spirit, ye shall ask of the Father in the name of Jesus; and if he give not unto you that spirit, then you may know that it is not of God. And it shall be given unto you, power over that spirit; and you shall proclaim against that spirit with a loud voice that it is not of Godâ??not with railing accusation, that ye be not overcome, neither with boasting nor rejoicing, lest you be seized therewith."

Many Latter-day Saints and other Christians can testify of the power of the adversary. In my own life I've been in two situations where the evil was palpable. Unfortunately, those experiences are purely subjective; they've thoroughly convinced me.

Take Gordon's example- is it unfair to think that his sister basically set him up? Based on the evidence, I would say no.

No??

Absolutely!!

You don't know me, my sister, or our relationship together.

I was eighteen, while she was in her mid-twenties...so we were a bit past the childish pranks. Also, we were always close, so she never picked on, or teased, me growing up (we just never did those things to each other). We were both curious to the Ouija board and wanted to try it.

Perhaps, though, you also believe the man named "Legion" was 'setting up' Jesus (while the pigs were also in on the prank)...

Seriously, I find it rather strange that those that believe in the Bible and BoM somehow have a hard time believing in unfriendly spirits being present when people tempt/invite them. :P

You asked why an evil spirit would waste their time fooling with a cardboard game...well, what should they be doing? Legion just hung aroung a graveyard.

Not saying he lied.

If you were familiar with my posts, you would clearly see that I am not the type of poster who makes up stories.

Gordon: Many times skeptics have considerable faith that these things can't and don't happen, because it's a part of their belief system. A lot of folks scoff at this GHOST HUNTER series on the Sci-Fi Channel, but I've seen things happen on that show that I fully believe are not fabricated. I've seen spirits answer those TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) researchers by way of voice and by through objects such as toys and flashlights. In the case of a flashlight, one team member put his flashlight down on the floor. It was a tactical unit, one where the switch on the back had to be engaged before it would turn on. He would ask yes/no questions and the light would engage and disengage to answer. Being familiar with these lights, I know it would be almost impossible to rig one to do what it did. I also saw a toy engine respond to questions. Clearly it was not voice activated, either, because it was unresponsive when certain questions would be asked. But when asked to make the noise three times it did so. Then, when asked, it would respond by making the noise as many times as the researchers asked. The temperature also dropped if I recall. That's common when false spirits are manifesting themselves. My biggest problem with people who do things like that is that they believe anything the spirits tell them, without questioning it.

Odd the tidbits of info I have, but I'd just thought I'd comment that non-physical entities have a great deal of difficulty manipulating the physical things in the world. But when it comes to electrical devices/flows of electrons, they have an easier time. Probably due to the nature of electricity.

Cinepro,

You may not know me and may not care to but let me tell you this. As a witness of the darkside power, the ouija board is a devils tool to direct his powers on earth! I have seen things with mine own eyes that I cannot explain and I have a very rational and methodical thinking process. You may disbelieve all you want but I know as sure as Christ does live that ouija boards are real and have powers from the unseen world when channeled correctly! I will never come close to one of those evil boards ever again!

It can tell the truth of ones immediate thoughts 100% of the time if asked- even if the individual is not around! My mother in law when she was young played with one and was so disturbed by it she picked it up and tore it in half and destroyed it. The next morning the board was in perfect condition sitting on her table! This stuff is no joke! I have seen unexpalinable phenomena with the use of these wicked boards!

Rob, I'm sorry, but it is a joke. And apparently the joke has been on you.

Contemporary Ouija Boards are cardboard boards printed with letters and numbers. The pointer is a mass-produced plastic shell, sometimes with a small plastic window in it. There is no incantation or "blessing" given the board at the factory. What, exactly, is the mechanism involved in getting "spirits" to actually take control of humans that the Ouija Board makes use of?

The Ouija Board does not predict or reveal any information beyond what the people present could know or guess of their own volition. There is no mechanism for spirits, evil or otherwise, to somehow actually control they physical movements of a group of people. If it were possible, it would happen all the time, not just at slumber parties. If a Ouija Board was useful for even the most simple information gathering, atheists and other folks would use them all the time. They would have them in their cars instead of GPS computers. They would all be rich from buying Ouija directed stocks.

But the Ouija remains what it has always been: a silly parlor game that makes use of peoples' involuntary arm movements and susceptibility to ascribing supernatural explanations to simple phenomenon. This is testable and demonstratable in so many different ways, it would almost be a waste of time to show you. If you took 5 minutes, you could think of at least 20 tests, I'm sure, that would show whether or not any supernatural forces are at work. Try to think of a really good test, and give it a shot. And I'll give you a hint: a really good test will try to prove that the Ouija Board doesn't work (falsify it), not prove that it does.

Cinepro: Spoken like a true skeptic...which is okay. Some folks have to experience things like this before they believe and it would be ill advised to take someone's word on such a thing. Still, it's not so much the paper board or the plastic planchette, it's opening one's self to the false spirits and their influence.

Haunted houses do exist, yet they are simply, most of the time, old houses or houses built on land that has been troubled by evil spirits. Even the ancient Greeks and Romans knew about such things, yet homes themselves are made of various manmade materials (as stated by someone previously). Yet those who brave such places can often hear voices, see apparitions, experience drops in temperature, see doors shut, chairs move and so forth. The Stanley Hotel in Colorado is so haunted that even skeptics are converted. (See the TAPS episode on YouTube.) Video of doors opening by themselves, voices and a glass shattering by the bedside were all featured on the show. I suppose the glass shattering might have an, as yet, unknown scientific reason, but the door was fairly credible.

The following Halloween we were indulging in the spirits(booze) in another cemetery in the county. It was our first time there. On further investigation...we were drinking upon the grave of none other than one "Howard Que." We left post haste.

Is this a true story, Mudcat or are you messing with us?

If you made it up, it was really great. Might make for a good short story.

If you didn't make it up, just please tell me you did, just so I can sleep....

Involuntary arm movements!?

Is that really your reasoning??

Yeah, involuntary arm movements that spell full words and sentences... :P

Simple phenomenon? I guess it was just the wind tossing the pointer in my sister's living room...with no windows or doors being open...

This thread has been very revealing into the gullibility of many people. I was fed the same campfire stories about ouija boards, and haunted graves when I was a kid, and I enjoy a good Stephen King story as much as anyone, but there came a point when I realized that these things were about the same as Santa Claus.

I am amazed at the power many of you ascribe to the "spirits" out there however. I didn't know it was part of Mormon teachings that evil spirits can read our thoughts, or predict the future. Anyone care to explain how that works with the plan of salvation? Are evil spirits omniscient just like God?

A few choice quotes:

Ron Osborn

They told me to think of a color and write it down on paper in the next room. I guessed "purple" and the board guessed it right. I said "lucky guess"! They said then to write down any word. I wrote down the word "money" and the board once again guessed it right. We then began a game of just mindless guessing what each others thoughts were- it was kinda cool! And then is when things started getting real freaky! A guy named NZ came into the discussion and wanted the people in the room to do certain favors (mindless tasks) in turn he would tell us our futures and would prove his worth by actually predicting events in our lives over the next few days and even hidden secrets held amongst the group of friends.

. . . . .

Later on me and my ex got back together and were married- we moved several times and ended up having a son. During one of our unpackings we stumbled across some of the recorded proceedings on the board and there recorded on one of the papers was this chilling bit-

It said that my wife (name witheld) would have a baby boy born to her on xx-xx-xx (date witheld, sorry) and that the father would be me. It was exactly correct! I have long since wondered if things just worked out coincidentally or if there was some kind of spiritual power held within that board and eyepiece!

Sanpitch

They told me to ask it a question that none of them knew the answer so I said, what is the home phone number of my boss at work. None of them even knew the guy but the board spelled out the exact phone number.

Mudcat

Of course you would deny actual experiences with these things as being figments of the imagination. I know that spirits on this earth are real, not because of myths and stories but because of experience with them. And I am not a fanciful person. I lived in a house in college where I was not alone in experiencing these things.

As we read in I Cor 2:14 "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

I have found that those who are spiritually sensitive to the good things of the spirit can often (not always) be more sensitive to the evil as well.

We have a paranormal team here in Iowa. It is sort of funny in some ways as I am just not that into that type of thing. I figure if there are spirits, lets leave them the heck alone and hopefully they will us. If there are not spirits, I think it is weird that we have to constantly be scaring ourselves with the idea.

However I have a friend who has been on this team for a few years. They work based on donations for equipment and all the team members pay for their own gas and such to get to locations. Most of their time is spent weeding out 'fakes' vs who really thinks something is haunting their house. They have never found anything that would really show them anything was truly there. Sometimes they got some weird 'evidences' of something, but never anything conclusive. My friend quit the team because they decided they were going to start trying to conjure spirits rather than just see if they could find them on their own. I guess he didn't mind going to look for ones that were there, but didn't want to call them.

Umm...yes? The problem with ascribing supernatural theories to such things is that we first have to rule out the natural ones, and we don't really know what the limits are of our natural talents.

And involuntary arm movements are easily testable for Ouija Boards and dowsing rods. Just take your arms off the pointer or dowsing rod. If the spirits are somehow able to physically move your arm, then they should also be able to physically move the pointer, right? Or have everyone put their hands on the pointer, but specifically say that this is just a test, and you are not open to having any spirits help you. See what happens. (Hint: the pointer will move anyway).

You could also try a test where you get 5 or 6 Ouija boards with random markings (the letters and words are all mixed up in different positions). Then have everyone participating put on a good blindfold, and then have an observer place one of the boards on the table and ask a simple question. See how well the participants do when they have no idea where the words and letters are on the board. (Hint: you'll get jibberish).

There are so many good (and easy) ways to test whether or not supernatural forces are involved in a Ouija Board, I'm amazed there is even one person over the age of 13 who still believes in them. But honestly, it isn't nearly as much fun or spooky, so I don't blame anyone for wanting to believe that there are spirits hanging around just waiting to control our arms to spell out someone's favorite color. It almost reminds me of Alma 11:21-22, wherin we learn that Satan's most cunning argument involves... trying to bribe someone to deny God. I mean, even the most garden-variety atheist in 2008 has about a thousand pretty good arguments against the theories of God, but in Alma 11 the best Satan can come up with is "I'll pay you to deny God". It's the same with Ouija Boards. Do we really think there are billions of evil spirits which have the power to control us, but they have to wait for us to place our hands on a plastic pointer before they can actually take over? How does that make any sense?

One of my favorite stories of such things is the story of Clever Hans. It's really an amazing story, and teaches us just one lesson about how easy it is to be fooled (or to fool ourselves).

I've done a lot of reading on the early days of the church and some of the spiritual manifestations that led to confusion and to apostasy. I'm convinced of what the Doctrine & Covenants says is true, namely, that there are many false spirits abroad in the land. Many of our prophets have been shown in vision the power of the dark side.

Elder Heber C. Kimball recalled his experience in England: "While I was thus engaged I was struck with great force, by some invisible power, and fell senseless to the floor. The first thing I remembered was being supported by Elders Hyde and Richards, who were praying for me. I then arose and sat upon the bed, when a vision was opened to our minds, and we could plainly see the evil spirits who foamed and gnashed their teeth at us. They came toward us like armies rushing to battle." In a letter to Kimball from Elder Orson Hyde, Hyde wrote: "Every circumstance which occurred in that scene of devils is just as fresh in my recollection as it was at the time of its occurrence." Here again is another case of multiple witnesses experiencing the same event, and this is what sets Mormonism apart from all the other claimants. Every notable part of the Restoration has been witnessed. The restoration of the priesthood, the restoration of keys of authority by Elijah and Moses, the acceptance of temples replete with angels and the gifts of the spirit, the opposition of devils to the preaching of the Gospel in Europe. Even the revelation on priesthood in 1978 was witnessed and experienced by an entire group of men, when it could have just as easily been given only to one man, President Kimball.

The Lord doesn't provide these witnesses without a reason. In a world teaming with false prophets and blind guides, the Lord understands skepticism and has provided witnesses to establish a foundation of credibility. Not proof, but as a launching pad to discovering the truth. It's not surprising that those skeptical of religion would also be skeptical of evil spirits, and a belief in wicked spirits is not wholly necessary to accept the Gospel; still, the wise will try unknown spirits instead of believing them. And if there are no evil spirits, there is no Gospel, and Joseph Smith was not a prophet, neither was Jesus the Christ. So to call people "gullible" for believing a tenant of their religion is to call them gullible for accepting their religion, which is the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Ghost hunters who do their "investigations" with a psychic are immediately suspect to me. I've watched TAPS enough to have confidence in the integrity of their top people. I've seen a sound guy knocked senseless; I've seen another fellow fall to the ground, speechless and not able to breathe; I've also seen the sudden, hot rash that appeared on Jason's back as he entered a room in a house he was investigating. He said it was as if he were touched with a hot poker. I've also seen water faucets turn on, seemingly by themselves and I've heard voices that the researchers heard at the time. I've always been skeptical myself of EVPs, as with all the signals in the air these days, it's too easy for them to pop up on electronic medium, like recorders. But I think the evidence the TAPS people have gleaned is impressive and irrefutable. It's pretty difficult to put one over them and I trust their integrity. My only criticism of them is that they tend to believe what the spirits tell them.
