Severian Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 Couldn't you place photos of all the wives around this daguerreotype, and see if the all turn toward it?
cksalmon Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 No way is that Brigham Young! Unless he had a nose transplant! This guy's nose looks exactly like mine, and I can't think of any way that a nose can go from a turned up ski slope to a straight nose without cutting the end of it off.I agree. The unknown has a little bulb on his nose. BY manifestly doesn't--at least in any of the images I've seen. Based on my rather lame and superficial analysis, I'd say, "Not him." Best.CKS
katherine the great Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 there could be more to this post than meets the eye...what are you implying? . . . That I must be related to him? (Does that make me a Levite?)
Bernard Gui Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 That guy doesn't even have a beard!!!Duh!!! BY had a beard only for a very short period later in his life.Bernard
ERMD Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 BY had a beard only for a very short period later in his life.BernardI think you missed the big, winking smiley thing.
katherine the great Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 BY had a beard only for a very short period later in his life.BernardIs fifteen years a "short" period of time?
DonBradley Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 I would guess that it's not BY. Although BY's eyes appear somewhat purposely narrowed in the known photographs, the consistency and degree of the narrowing suggest that the eyes in the newly found daguerrotype belonged to someone else. One of the strongest similarities is the hairstyle. I wonder if the daguerrotype would be suspected to be of BY at all were it not for that hairstyle. But the similar hairstyle could simply reflect living at the same time and having similar taste. There is some facial similarity, but not, IMO, enough to indicate that the two figures are identical. However, this person may, as suggested, have been a BY relative. The Youngs were, I believe, a numerous clan even before polygamy. Do we have photos of Joseph Young and others in the family?Don
ed2276 Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 Is it me, or does Brigham Young look hot in this picture? He does appear to be hot. Maybe if he took off his jacket he'd be cooler. And someone pleeeese get someone to show Brigham how to tie a tie.
Asaph Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 That is a great picture - what I am really looking for is the alleged Joseph Smith picture that someone, I forgot who, is using as an avatar. Would someone be kind enough to respond to this message with same?Blessings Asaph

Bill “Papa” Lee Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 The picture may soon be offered for sale at an auction (along with other Mormon materal found with it) ...(notice the hint of a face mole just left of the mouth)...?????Uncle Dale.No...but he did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.Pa Pa
Maidservant Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 I got beat to it, but I was gonna say, isn't Brigham, like, ten times hotter than this dude??Not him. Trust me. Y'all are funny doing the scientific this and that, but it's a photo more or less and it's the same as photos taken with a digital cam -- either it is or it isn't Brigham . And it isn't. They don't even have the same philosophy -- the same look in their eye. Brigham was never "sweet". The dude in the pic is near to 22 or so, unless uncharacteristically youthful. Oddly enough, the feature that IS the most similar on them is their lip shape, ha ha. So stop doin' that! Ha ha.
Asaph Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 I don't think this is BY based upon comparision among the photos presented. The person in the colored daugerrotype has a longer philtrum, the groove in the upper lip, than the known BY specimens. This denotes a longer space between the bottom of the nose and the top of the upper lip bow on the questioned image than the known ones. Questioned photo also has somehwhat flared nostrils compared to knowns. For what its worth - I used to teach photo-photo facial comparison in my old job at a Government forensic document laboratory. This is the approach we always took - comparing where different facial features are realtive to each other. We called it facial geometry.AgapeAsaph

It was discussed a couple of months ago.http://www.mormonapologetics.org/index.php...c=23022&hl=I'd be interested to hear your opinion on that one as well.

I would need a better picture than the one on the link to do a real photo-photo and even that would be with a photo of a death mask versus a person. If that death mask had ears, however, this would be a lot easier. Even in the grainy image the alleged JS has ears, the bottoms of which line up pretty evenly with the bottom of his nose if your drew a line from the bottom of one ear to the other. Having a face with some features that match up this nicely is ususally considered to be "good looking" My gut feeling is, however, that that picture really is Joseph Smith. There are more simililarites that differences - APPARENT distance between bottom of nose and upper lip - lower lip "poutier" than upper lip, distance between the eyes. Noses overall look somewhat different but the weight of the plaster or whatever they used in the mask could have pressed the tip down a little or otherwise moved it. (I dont' think this would be big enough a different to alter its basic position, just its overall appearance) I think the person in the death mask might have had the "raccoon eyes" - swollen bruised areas around the eye that people with basal skull fractures get. Maybe Joseph got one when he fell out the window. I have seen people who died in car accidents or got shot in the head have this too. That's my guess - assuming we are looking at the right picture. Nice "chatting" with you.BlessingsAsaph
