A Better "amazing Grace" Poll

There are two problems with the existing "Amazing Grace" poll thread. These are: (1) the rather foolish assumption that one cannot like the hymn and disagree with its doctrinal positions, and (2) the rather sneakily dishonest way in which Latter-day Saint respondents are obliged to assent to the false claim that "Trinitarians" are the only Christians.

This poll does away with those faults.

Let's see where we actually stand on this hymn, shall we?

I'm presuming you refer to the two middle options of the second question. Option 2 was put in there especially for Erik. Option 3 is there for the Rhinos and Cksalmons.

I'm among those who like the hymn, but am not too concerned about what it says doctrinally. The tune is hauntingly beautiful, and I think it has become more than a hymn, it is a part of our culture.

Whatever you think, I am posting the library of congress special link on Amazing Grace. I hope you all will enjoy it.

The poll has 74 votes (2 x 37, of course) and has only been going since yesterday afternoon. Erik's bogus "Mormons vs. Christians[tm]" poll has been going since the 10th, and has only 53 total votes.

Just prior to voting I reviewed the lyrics to Amazing Grace.

In and of itself, I do not see anything doctrinally problematic with it. Only when Protestant presuppositions are imputed into it (OSAS / Eternal Security / Irresistible Grace, etc.) does it become problematic.

But the same could be said for the Bible.

I wonder how many of the hymns in our current hymnal could be rendered undoctrinal simply by imposing sectarian presuppositions on them.

You could even do that to the Book of Mormon, which speaks of the Godhead as being "one God"!

As I said on the other thread, this is a favorite hymn of mine and I hope it will be included in our Hymnbook someday. And while they're at it, I hope they put "Come thou fount of every blessing" back! Whose idea was it to remove it in the first place?

Great hymn mainly based upon it's origin and the truths in it's words. I would be considered trinitarian and patient until the believer discovered that Jesus is in fact God. From what I understand another verse was recently discovered. I think I threw away the paper that had the words on it though.
