Translators Needed!

All we know from the OP is that someone is looking for remote “translators” (here comes Scott...) for hospitals in NY.  I didn’t hear anything about starting a business.  My first reaction was to assume that hospitals are needing qualified medical interpreters as hospitals/providers are always concerned about liability issues.

So qualified medical translators, because they now have nothing to do, and are not in demand, are going to work for free, because they also do not have families that they have to care for.

All this while we have a pool of people who know a bunch of languages and are now expecting to do service for free, but they can't because of Covid, but of course they can't help because they are not "qualified" medical translators. 

And worst of all, there is no compromise available, like those who are not "qualified " just help out on easy cases, and then pass it on to someone else when the translating gets a little tough.

Horrible idea.

Should not have even been mentioned as a possibility.

Sorry I did not answer sooner. Contact your stake president to contact the mission president of the New York mission, let's see if there's anything there that would work

There are probably folks here who have connections with folks in Salt Lake but at least one could do what I just suggested.

And it would be great press for the church.

Maybe Scott has some connections as to how to get some  press or PR folks behind it, possibly in the church Newsroom Etc.

I left all of that behind two years ago. 
 

But did you miss my post wherein I suggested the Church’s JustServe website and app and network? That still seems to me the best bet. It amounts to the infrastructure already being in place for this sort of thing. 
 

And mtomm, who had just given a talk in Church on JustServe the week before, seemed delighted to be reminded about it when I made the suggestion.

I didn’t see anything about working for free either.  I think you are making a lot of assumptions.  Look, NY is desperate right now.  They are also asking...begging..for nurses to come help (“because they have nothing to do and are not in high demand, and don’t have families to care for...”).  Even with nursing shortages, they are not going to use unqualified people to take over nursing roles.  Why?  Because of liability.  I expect it is the same with interpreters.  Nothing has changed.  People can still sue.  People are still expected to be qualified.  There are still qualifications.

Sure, missionaries can help in lots of ways, but they can’t start taking over roles that previously required qualifications and not expect law suits.  Just like they are not going to have nursing aides start taking over nursing roles for the same reasons.

I interpreted the OP to be a desperate plea for medical interpreters, just like the desperate plea for nurses...good luck!  We are all stretched thin.

I think you misinterpreted my intent.

I should have been clearer I guess. Most of that post was intended to be sarcastic.

You said it was not a "business". 

My point was that regardless of whether or not one calls it a business surely those professional translators would have to be paid.

The government itself has to have economic incentives to run, so in  that   sense, whoever pays the bill is in a "business," or that entity will go bankrupt and cease operations.

But here we have missionaries who don't expect to get paid. Their service would cost the entity nothing.  In fact they have already volunteered to give two years of their lives for service, without renumeration. Who does that?

Our missionaries, that's who.

Surely they would help in some way or another.

Liabilities can be handled by disclaimers.  Everybody is doing the best they can here.
