Mary Ann Adams - Black Saints History

Since it is black history month I want to take a moment to honor the pioneer Mary Ann Adams (wife of Elijah Abel - the first black mormon ordained to the priesthood by Ambrose Palmer see guest post by W. Paul Reeve, http://www.keepapitchinin.org/2019/01/18/guest-post-newly-discovered-document-provides-dramatic-details-about-elijah-able-and-the-priesthood/)  - I love the work by Ardis - she is a great historian who has found many precious documents over the years.

“Mary Ann stands as a spiritual ancestor of every black LDS woman,” says Alice Faulkner Burch, president of the all-women Relief Society in the Genesis Group for black members, “and a great example to us of strong, confident faith in God to continue forward.”

  After she passed away in 1877 Elijah wrote to the first presidency requesting to be sealed to his wife.  In response church leaders mistakenly instituted a 100 year racial ban against black eternal families, and blocked all requests for temple ordinances including eternal marriage from blacks due to their african lineage.
