There is no manuscript evidence for his changes on Matthew to two angels sitting on the rock.  He was trying to harmonize  several accounts that were contradictory.

Or, he was receiving revelation on what actually transpired.  In my view the point of the Joseph Smith Translation is not to try to restore what the manuscripts originally said, but to give us more insight into the intended meaning or to restore things that were part of the events that may or may not have made it into any of the manuscripts.   Although apparently there is manuscript evidence for some of the Joseph Smith Translation changes as pointed out in this study:    https://rsc.byu.edu/archived/selected-articles/quest-origins-joseph-smith-translation-and-latin-version-new-testament

When I read Richard Howard's  Restoration Scriptures  in the section dealing with the IV some sections he pronounced as "correct"     Interesting is Jonah Ch 3.

Jonah 3:9-10 King James Version (KJV)

Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

Jonah 3:9-10 New International Version (NIV)

Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.”

10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

IV 3:9-10

9 Who can tell if we will repent and turn unto God but he will turn away from us his fierce anger that we perish not

10 and God saw their works that they turned  from their evil way and repented and God turned away the evil that he said he would bring upon them

Smith had not yet learned Hebrew.     God changed his mind.

Jonah 3:9-10 New English Translation (NET Bible)

Who knows? Perhaps God might be willing to change his mind and relent and turn from his fierce anger so that we might not die.” 10 When God saw their actions—they turned from their evil way of living!—God relented concerning the judgment he had threatened them with and he did not destroy them.

The people of Nineveh repented.  They changed their behavior and that was what mattered.   So what's your point?

Smith misunderstood the words "God repented" because he knew no Hebrew.  Throughout the in you find evidence he was an amateur with no particular inspiration from God. The Richard Howard book shows instances that he must have got tired of the job like he does with his interpretations in Fac 2 in the BOA.  His creative juices were drying up.

Maybe we could just all acknowledge that for some people the historical accuracy of the accounts is not relevant to its spiritual message  to them and then we could focus on the former as the OP is asking?

Really, if the historical provenance is  irrelevant why bother objecting to questions about it? Okay, so you don't care about Q  or that Mark was the first Gospel to survive or that Mathew and Luke used Mark extensively and freely altered its order and wording or that Mark 16:9-20 probably is not original and was probably added much later on by scribes attempting to harmonize it with the other gospels. The message is the same for you, but for some of us, these are interesting questions that help explain Jesus's ministry and life.

Reminds me of that statement in a few good men "You can't handle the truth"  I see this with Pentecostals  "feelings" trump facts. The feeling of "community" means more than the truth.  Trumps behavior does not change their feelings about his followers.Joseph Smiths numerous "wives" is explained away. Brigham Young had no responsibility for the MMM.  Why did it take so long to bring Lee to justice?  Trump's followers are also referred to as a "cult"

I see the problem.  You still think the JST has something to do with Hebrew or Greek as a translation from one language into another (and it's nothing like that).  See my previous post.  The JST isn't a "translation" as most people today would use the word.  Joseph Smith was conveying the meaning intended which may include different or additional inspired words,  and it may not be a word for word translation from one language into another.  Consider the book of Moses in the Pearl of Great Price.  You realize that is part of the Joseph Smith translation from the first chapters of the book of Genesis, right?  Which Hebrew word(s) do you think he used for all of those additional chapters?

But putting aside your misconception of the JST, what do you think it means when it says that God "relented" from what he was going to do in this context?  Would you say he didn't change his mind?   I'm still not getting why you think there is any significance to this.

The New Living Translation (that's not really a translation) of the Bible renders Jonah 3:10 this way:   "When God saw what they had done and how they had put a stop to their evil ways, he changed his mind and did not carry out the destruction he had threatened."

I'm still left with, so what?

Holy non sequitur, Batman. Didn't know this was a thread about Mountain Meadows or piolygamy or Trump.
