Fallibility within the church

Got it. I strongly disagree that what you refer to disparagingly as “a 1950s mentality” is “alive and strong” in Utah.

Only as far as the subject at hand is, such as the feeling that the prophet and the 14  aren't fallible. That's how I've felt when in GD classes or in my various wards at different times and how we are to follow them. Really haven't heard that we are only to follow them if we've prayed about it.

This could be because they assumed everyone would know this without needing to say it.

As far as I can tell, the people in my ward generally understand it this way given testimonies since they talk about praying to learn truth, what they should do, etc  and their behaviour (the devout members I know well are obviously not rigid in their choices, but adapt instruction for their circumstances).

I’m not convinced that “mentality” was ever “alive and strong” in Utah — in the 1950s or any other time. I know it seems to be a favorite caricature among some of our antagonists — hence the dog whistle I identified.

I'm not going to be your dog in the fight here, so consider the primary song, "Follow the Prophet" or consider the talk, "Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet", given by Pres. Benson. Could these teachings set a precedent, here in Utah, the hub of TCOJCOLDS? https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/liahona/1981/06/fourteen-fundamentals-in-following-the-prophet?lang=eng

You sound like you’re talking about Exiled, who accused me of repeating a “follow the Brethren” mantra in nearly all my posts, though I’ve done no such thing.

In fact, in today’s political parlance, “follow the prophet” is a dog whistle among those of such an attitude. They might claim they are not being insulting when they apply it to faithful Church members, but in fact they are, because what they really mean is follow the prophet <blindly.> Their intent is to cast Church members as mindless automatons.

Yes, and that is why I wanted to poke a hole in that interpretation in the first place

Many other than exiled here have brought up that view

There are threads going on right now based on the misunderstanding of how we "follow the prophet"

In fact any questioning of the prophethood of Joseph is basically in that category. So that means virtually every thread on this board is in that category to some degree or other.

So even threads about the legitimacy of the Book of Mormon are ultimately about how stupid we are for following the prophet.

Neither the Primary song nor the President Benson talk need to be understood in the cynical light you seem determined to place them in. As Calm pointed out, it is axiomatic among faithful Latter-day Saints that we follow the prophet only when he is acting in his role of conveying revelation from God.

So what happens if a member prays about something taught by a GA and their answer is that they feel it is not correct.  What happens then?  What happens if they go to their bishop to discuss their feelings?  I do personally know several members, one being my brother in law who was a mission president at the time, who prayed and really felt the 2015 policy of exclusion was wrong and not inspired.  He was told to basically keep keep praying until they get a positive answer.
