Calm Posted February 4, 2019 Posted February 4, 2019 Haven't had a chance to read it yet, but thought others would be interested. http://www.pewforum.org/2019/01/31/religions-relationship-to-happiness-civic-engagement-and-health-around-the-world/ Headlines indicate positive correlation of activity with happiness and engagement, but not with health in general. 2
pogi Posted February 4, 2019 Posted February 4, 2019 (edited) I read this article previously. What struck me even more than the discrepancy in happiness reporting between actively religious and unaffiliated/inactive is the discrepancy in reported happiness between Mexican citizens and US citizens. But maybe this is another topic for another thread. It just seemed so ironic that we are the ones building the wall! In terms of reported happiness, Mexico is by far the more attractive nation to live in. What are we missing here? Why is it that the developing nations report all the happiness (Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador), and the more developed nations report less happiness (US, Hong Kong, Chile, Spain). That is telling of something gone awry in our quest for riches and stability. Only 36% of the actively religious in the US report being "very happy". That is a terrible, terrible statistic! Compare that to 61%-64% of unaffiliated/inactive in Mexico who report being "very happy". It seems that our religions are not enough to counterbalance the effect of our national culture on our happiness to a sufficient degree. Then there are the 71% of actively religious in Mexico who report being "very happy". Why aren't we there? What are we missing? Edited February 4, 2019 by pogi 2
The Nehor Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Wait.......religion is supposed to make me happy in this life too and not just the next? I am going to have to file a formal complaint with management! 1

No, just happier than you would be without it (which may not be happy, but rather less depressed) ****Just for those that might take me too seriously, the research is correlation, not causation. Happier people might seek out organized religion at a higher rate for some reason, rather than religious beliefs or activities causing the happiness. Could be a combo of the two or something else.
