If that seems confusing to you, it's because God has intentionally let the ambiguity persist because He knows that it freaks some people out thinking that the regular "eternal" definition applies. But he let the cat out of the bag to Joseph Smith in 1829, when he said this: Quote Nevertheless, it is not written that there shall be no end to this torment, but it is written endless torment. 7 Again, it is written eternal damnation; wherefore it is more express than other scriptures, that it might work upon the hearts of the children of men, altogether for my name’s glory. 8 Wherefore, I will explain unto you this mystery, for it is meet unto you to know even as mine apostles. 9 I speak unto you that are chosen in this thing, even as one, that you may enter into my rest. 10 For, behold, the mystery of godliness, how great is it! There is such a thing as a healthy fear of hell but neither the people/idiots who make these billboards or the people they are trying to reach experience it.

Fear and trembling seem to be discussed a lot in the scriptures. Why do you think that is so if it is such a lousy motivator?

If someone is reading the scriptures containing those warning there is a better then average possibility they fit in that group. Does not work as well with your average billboard viewer. 1
