If Fermi had been exposed to the evidence we have acquired since 1950, he might have rethought his ideas. At one time people were sure that if a person was to travel much over the speed of a fast horse, they were likely to die. If one was to tell someone from the late 1700's  that there would come a time when a person would be able to have breakfast in New York and lunch in London the same day, a rubber room would be made available quickly. We see the speed of light as a limit to space travel yet it is speculated that it might be possible to fold space and time and cover great distances without having to travel anywhere near the speed of light.

That makes the paradox worse, not better, lad. Seriously, think about it.

Look ok up in the sky. See any green stars?

None?

Really, not even one?

No E.T.s.  Q.E.D.

I personally think that these things are "real" in the fact that they can be tracked by radar, leave behind physical evidence of their existence, we have visual evidence like the video you posted and many legitimate eyewitnesses speak of seeing these UFO's. That being said there certainly is evidence of false claims as well.

You seem to hint that they exist or are "real". Is that fair to say? What is your take on these things Robert?

I'm not Robert, but imo the "real" UFO sightings, like the ones the Navy released information about, could fall into one of at least three categories:

1.  Ours.

2.  Somebody else's, but still built by people on this planet.

3.  Originating from off this planet.

My casual observation from reading more than my fair share of UFO accounts leads me to believe that a disproportionate number of such encounters occur near nuclear weapons facilities (starting with the Roswell crash in 1947, Roswell being the base for this planet's only nuclear capable squadron at the time, the 509th Bombardment Group).

My understanding is that back in the early 1950's the presence of UFOs near military bases scared the Soviets because they assumed they were ours, and the UFOs scared our leaders because we assumed they were theirs.  Fortunately we talked with the Soviets about it before anybody took their assumptions too far.

I can think of lots of reasons why our government wouldn't want to lend credibility to UFO sightings, whether such advanced technology is ours, or someone else's, or comes from off this planet, or more than one of the above.  Considered in that light, imo the US Navy's release of the information Robert cites in his post is all the more intriguing because all of a sudden it lends credibility to other similar reports, implying that this may be bigger than we thought.

I have a fairly standard view on this for a Mormon: God won't allow us to get into contact with other of His children, because that would upset the balance between faith and proof.  If we get to chatting and find out lo and behold they have the exact same plan of salvation, doctrines, etc., as we do, that would just be too in-your-face!

Thinking about it from a non-religious perspective, however, is very interesting I think.  Fermi's Paradox essentially proves there are no other civilizations within our galaxy (the chances of them arising at the exact same cosmic millisecond as ours such that they haven't completely taken over the galaxy, as we doubtless will given the time, is impossibly unlikely).

I agree with your first sentence, but not so much with the second. Fermi's paradox is rather dated and we have learned a lot since the 1940s. The missing bit of information that makes the question impossible to answer is that we do not know how life begins.

Not sure what I think about UFOs and aliens, but I do KNOW that the Smoking Man finally revealed his real name on the X-Files last night!

As a teen I was curious about aliens and UFOs, I read two books by Captain Bruce Cathie: Harmonic 33 and Harmonic 695. The best book I read was 'UFOs: the Definite Casebook'. To understand a meeting of man and UFO or Alien requires an understanding similar to the ability to interpret dreams: like Joseph in Genesis had. If you don't have any gift to interpret dreams then you won't understand UFO encounters either -- so are UFO encounters from God or the Devil? I think they are like angels sent from God to try and get unbelievers to repent and become more childlike. The encounter with something they can't comprehend bypasses the proud intellect and forces the person(s) to become more humble. So I think a UFO encounter is an experience of the awesome power of God.  Crop Circles have a similar challenging effect on people, another phenomenon hard for a sinner to comprehend.

I don't believe in little grey men with large eyes -- that is an interpretation a person makes of the awesome spirit of God that they are encountering.
