strappinglad Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I was wondering how the Motab might perform at the inaugural and still keep the other half of the country happy. I think it depends on what music is chosen. How about doing a cover of Michael Jackson's " Thriller "? That should make some serious buzz for the late night talk shows. Any other suggestions? 3

And how is what President-elect Trump tweeted different than what President Obama is already doing? "The Obama administration has requested large increases for nuclear weapons programs at the Defense and Energy Departments to sustain and modernize the arsenal. Indeed, current and proposed spending levels for many key efforts currently exceed what the administration originally advertised early in its first term." https://www.armscontrol.org/factsheets/USNuclearModernization Obama's attempt to modernize the nuclear arsenal is not really part of an arms race. It is more a safety issue. Our aging weapons and (more so) our aging launch systems are a bit of a safety hazard and they desperately need updating. They are still using floppy disks to run the system that were obsolete in the late 90s. I know of a guy in his 70s who helped build our ICBM arsenal. The guy is making a killing as a contractor as one of the few people left alive who still know how the things were designed. He has little interest in passing on the knowledge because it would kill his gravy train. I am all for modernization. Trump's missteps over Taiwan are what most people worry will heat up a new possible nuclear conflict. Yes, by word our maintaining the "One China" policy that Taiwan is part of China while we also sell weapons to Taiwan makes little sense. It is a ridiculous fiction but it is a ridiculous fiction that works to keep the peace with China and allow Taiwan to defend itself. Trump seemed to toss it aside without understanding it. 1

Motab is also unlike other performers in that they do not need to keep a super-positive public image to make money and stick around. They will be fine and the whole thing will be forgotten soon. 1

thatjimguy Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I know we are supposed to back our leaders, so i guess this is fine. It will not even be thought of days after it happens. Id suggest just dropping the matter silently and letting it just happen.

The fact that it has now been invited to perform at seven presidential inaugurals is a cause for celebration. No, I for one won't be "dropping the matter silently." Outside of Utah, and internationally, I believe the negative impact will outweigh any positives. I doubt it will have any lasting negative impact at all. When the MoTab performed in the former Soviet Union many years ago, was it inappropriate because of the millions of people that the Communists murdered, and the millions that they held in virtual and literal slavery over the course of that country's history? Did the choir's performance there endorse the Communist regime? Of course not. Everyone thought it was peachy keen that the Choir was invited by those brutal dictators to play sacred music. But performing at Trump's inauguration? Hissy-fits -- Blair Hodges is one of my Facebook friends, and he posted about this. The reaction from many people was amazing. There's nothing wrong, immoral, or disgusting about the MoTab performing at Trump's inauguration. The Inauguration is not a celebration of Trump, it is a celebration of the orderly transfer of power in the most powerful country in the history of the world. One that, for all its faults, is also one of the most free and prosperous countries in the history of mankind. It is an honor for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to be asked to sing at the Presidential Inauguration. 7

The leader of Taiwan called Trump to congratulate him. All Trump did was tweet about it -- and yes, they should probably take his Twitter account away from him, for his own good. I, for one, think it is positively ridiculous for the US to have to step so carefully around the PRC's insane insistence that Taiwan is a rebellious province. It's just like their law against reincarnation -- that you have to get government permission to reincarnate. They are nearly as insane as their buddy Kim Jong Un in North Korea. 3

Scott Lloyd Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 (edited) What perhaps has not gotten enough emphasis here is the invitation to the choir to perform at the inaugural as it pertains to fulfillment of prophecy. Nephi beheld in vision that the church of the Lamb of God would be "over all the face of the earth"" but that it's numbers would be few by reason of the devil's influence. To me, that says the Church in the latter days will have a global reach that is out of proportion to its numeric size. I expect this will continue until after the Second Coming of Christ. The appearance by the Tabernacle Choir at the presidential inaugural serves to bring global prominence to the Church, which, after all, is the choir's role as an ambassador of the Church. Those Church members who object to the appearance by the choir because they are mad at Trump are being myopic or, perhaps, showing they don't care about the Church achieving prominence through positive means such as the choir's appearance.
