Okrahomer Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 (edited) I received results today and discovered that I'm almost as "British" (51%) as the typical Brit (60%). In fact, a distant cousin who was born and bred in England is even less Bitish than I am! I also have quite a lot of Irish in me (18%); Western European (13%); Iberian (8%); Finnish/NW Russian (5%); East European (4%); and a little Scandinavian (1%). I'm puzzled that there isn't a higher Scandinavian element given we have Danes and Swedes on my mother's side a scant 3 generations back. Any DNA experts here who could help me understand how this works? Has anyone else undergone the DNA testing? It's very interesting to my ignorant mind, and would probably be even more so, if I just had a better understanding. Edited March 30, 2016 by Okrahomer

I would expect Danish and Swedish ancestry to show up as Western European because the modern population of those countries is Germanic. Some Swedes have Finnish ancestry. I do not know if what they mean by Scandinavian are current residents of Scandinavia (Germanic) or original residents of Scandinavia (Sami). I'm excited to see my results as well! 1

I read a bit further on the Ancestry.com website. If I'm understanding correctly, Ancestry (actually the Sorenson Genomics) has sampled DNA from more than 3,000 people whose ancestry has been proven to be very very "old" and long-lasting within a specific geographic area--Scandinavia for example. These samples become the "reference panel" against which everyone else's DNA is compared. Apparently, they will continue to add data to their reference panels, so that in time, our ethnicity results will/could change a little. Edited March 31, 2016 by Okrahomer Grammar

Wars many times over in Britian and women who had little protection or rights among the winners. Raids from Norway, Alglo-Saxons who were some if not some of the most skilled warriors who many came from Germany in the 5th century.
VideoGameJunkie Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 How do you do this DNA testing and how much does it cost?

Your call their service and they will send an envelop that you spit into. I hope to do it soon and I think it's $100 per person. I am leaving for an Alaskan Cruise in early May, so tapped out at the moment. But when I get back my wife and I will do it. Of course for my wife 25% will be Americian Indian, assuming no rape in earlier rape in he mother's side of her DNA

I did mine through Ancestry.com--which all members of the Church now can access for free. The test itself costs $99. They send you a kit which includes a small vial to collect and stabilize your saliva sample. You mail this back to them, and you get the results back in about a month. You can read about it here. UtahTexan Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 I did....I am 57% Scandinavian, 29% Irish......9% British.....the rest trace parts of Europe 1
strappinglad Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 I purchased the kit and it should arrive in a week or two. I was adopted so I will be curious to see if the results match the info I was given about my birth parents. I'm supposedly Limey/Squarehead. I will report my results here if I dare. 2
VideoGameJunkie Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 The reason I want to do it is because I was a test tube baby and don't know the background of the sperm donor that produced me and this would help figure it out. 1

That makes a lot of sense. I believe some testing services can actually use their databases to identify relatives on your paternal side. I imagine that could be quite exciting for you. 1
JAHS Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 (edited) Through genealogy I already knew I was from British/Scottish ancestry. In fact one of my ancestors is a famous temperamental Scottish king called Longshanks. Edited April 9, 2016 by JAHS 1

VideoGameJunkie Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Okrahomer I just mailed in my saliva sample. How did you receive the results? Was it a letter or an email?

Then about two weeks later they send an email indicating they're analyzing your DNA. And then finally about 2 weeks later they send notification that the results are in, and they provide a link for you to retrieve the results. I'm excited for you! 1

He was definitely not Scottish, as none of his ancestors, as far back as the 5th generation, at least, was a Scot. While he definitely fancied himself king of Scotland as well as England and Wales, the Scots did not accept his claim and were frequently in rebellion against him. 1

I saw Braveheart ;-)

thesometimesaint Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 I'm about half English and half Irish, with a smattering of Celt, Scot and Welsh mixed in.
GingerRed Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 I did my DNA testing with Family Tree DNA. Last year in 2015 they held a huge Family History Conference in Salt Lake City. Family Tree had a booth there, so they could get the sample right then and there! No shipping costs! So since I've been wanting to do this forever...and they were giving 20% discount...I thought, go for it! Now Family Tree takes the sample by gently scrapping the inside of your cheek. I was told that's more accurate than a spit sample. I took 8 weeks to get my results. I am 85 % European ( western and central Europe 61%....Southern Europe 15%....Eastern Europe 9%) and Middle Eastern ( Asia Minor) 14% ! The European is a lot of my dad's side. I already have my huge family tree on Ancestry ( and some on Family Search) I'm not surprised about the Middle Eastern as that's my mom's side ( Romania/ Albania/ Greece/Turkey). But what surprised me was my roots spread upward through Hungary, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus...I thought....hey! I wonder if I have Jewish roots? That would be so cool! I also noticed a slight sweep of DNA into far northern Africa...around upper Morocco and Nigeria! I'm like , what?? I have slight African roots?? Okay the only explanation I thought of for that is...well....I have a great great great grandfather who owned a plantation in North Carolina ..and many slaves. I'm not very proud of that as a heritage. But.....I wonder if...that's where that DNA might come from....? You never know. Its possible. Wish I could find a Moroccan or Nigerian match to find out! I would recommend that now that you have your DNA file, upload it to GEDmatch.com. GEDmatch can really break down your DNA results into tons of different ways! It's way cool! They give you a kit number that you can share with others who have kit numbers to see if you match! Many of the names of people who match my DNA are the on the same list of names that pop up on my Family Tree DNA. I have only spoken to one person so far who emailed me to say, hey we are cousins! Now we are working together to find that common ancestor! I haven't had the guts yet to make that same jump, by emailing someone myself. But I'm sure am curious, especially the names that come up as 2nd cousins! Wow so many!! If any of you already have a GEDmatch kit number, let me know! Lets compare! We might be related! Red 2
strappinglad Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 I found it interesting that I am mailing my sample to Ireland. Hmm 1
