I watched last year's Academy Award winner for Best Picture, "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" with my wife last night.  Chock-full of zingers ("popularity is the slutty little cousin of prestige").  And Edward Norton is pure genius.  Different though.  How it got to be Best Picture is beyond me.

To the OP... Invictus is inspiring. Cry Freedom is another powerful but not gratuitous film. Both of the above are about South Africa. Probably worth watching Cry Freedom first.  

Mr Van Dyke's Cockney was atrocious. His "Toff" (as the ancient banker) wasn't too bad, except when he said "investaws" and gave himself away as an American. (A real Brit would have said "investuz." )

"Invictus" is, by all accounts, a fine movie, but historically inaccurate. (An accurate retelling would star Suzie the Waitress.)

A G-rated movie may have a moral lesson that is not helpful.  An R-rated movie may have a good moral lesson.  Let the viewer beware.

I saw a photograph on the internet of a question from some state's bar exam that used an example directly taken from the movie Napoleon Dynamite that involved tater tots.

I'd choose an 'R' with a good moral to the story, over the smut on TV.  I just can't believe what the children/youth are watching on primetime now.  An infatuation with sex, it saddens me that they are missing out on good morals being taught, it makes me sick to my stomach.  As these writers are inept at good writing that they feel they must try to sell the series with sex.

I started a Netflix show once and saw way too much within the first 5 minutes....another it only took a minute. I should check first before watching.

I agree that sleazy content is often an attempt to make up for poor writing.

I try to use discretion but there are some good stories out there made into rated R movies.  I like to watch movies based off stories I read a lot.  It fascinates me. 

Anyway, growing up the number one mark of determining good faithful Mormon kids from less faithful Mormon kids (kids regarded as those that will be lost, it seemed) was whether they watched rated R movies or not.  If you didn't object or walk out when peer pressure was on full steam about watching a rated R movie then you had no story to tell at Rameumptum time.  Those stories still creep up now and then, though.

I don't have refined enough tastes in movies to ever really want to watch an R rated one. Usually I'm satisfied with the super hero/fantasy/action adventurey sci fi stuff.

I usually have to do some research before I go.  The one I stumbled across was "The Grand Torino".  My daughter and husband rented it and it was left at my house.  I thought I could turn it off if I was offended.  At first the language really turned me off, but the story line kept me watching.  Loved this film!!  Since then I've watched the PG version on cable.  A little easier to watch though.  I definitely would not have gone to this film in the first place so luckily it was laying around my house.  I really rarely go to R's, it all depends.

I love that movie!  But i've only seen it on TV so I missed the language from the start.

I watch R-rated movies all the time (everyday in fact) - I've recently been watching a lot of 80's and 90's anime (awesome stuff!) - I think it all depends on the strength of your character; not everyone can survive the fire and not be burnt.
