As it is, the statistics on their actual ages and lifespans might be a tad better than some calculations would indicate should be expected, but it's hardly indicative of some sort of divine intervention (especially when the diminished health of some prophets towards the ends of their lives is factored in). 1

They don't get expensive corporate retreats, multi-million dollar salaries, and, unlike the corporate executives, they cannot turn their responsibilities or even the company itself over to others when they grow old. The corporate executives also chose that life out of ambition, enjoying the job, greed, lust for power, or whatever. They can stop if they want. My company is a multi-billion dollar international company and I know the owner (though not very well) and his life is not the corporate stereotype nor are the VPs or presidents of the sub-companies. I kind of suspect the stereotype of the endlessly working executive is a myth put out by said executives as a preemptive strike at the accusation that they do not deserve their massive salaries. On the other hand the apostles are just called and stuck with it. 1

Of course their genetics is the most important factor, but First Class Healthcare obviously helps a lot too. Do you have evidence against that theory?

You don't think General Authorities enjoy their job? 2. It is true they don't have big salaries, but

Listen, my point is the General Authorities don't suffer (or are stressed) like Peterson claims, and I don't think being a General Authority is that bad. I myself would like to be a General Authority if that guarantees me first class healthcare. Edited February 26, 2016 by TheSkepticChristian

Duncan Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 For some reason i can't upload more than 112 of something otherwise I have a picture of Pres. Uchtdorf with kids in Guatemala and there are pictures of Pres. Monson with kids 1

Not sure what multi-billion dollar corporation that your work for, but at the one that I am at (approx. 190,000 employees worldwide, $50B in annual revenues), the executives in charge work like crazy (most average about 75 hours a week at their jobs). Anyway, I have no dog in this fight, I just found it curious that Dan Petersen marveled at the work ethic of these guys, when I see this type of work ethic every day at my own job. Maybe Dan has been in academia too long.

Maybe Dan has been in academia too long. I think we are only a little below that in revenue. Might be a cultural difference. My company is based in Europe and the national offices have a degree of independence and intermingle quote a bit so we have a cornucopia of different work cultures. Executives work hard but I am guessing it is around 55-60 hours a week with a generous vacation schedule (everyone gets at least four weeks of vacation a year and you are strongly encouraged to use it unlike some companies where getting time off is like pulling teeth).

His point appears pretty clear that he's refuting the notion that their position is glamorous. Your retort is that he gets to wave out the backseat window of a Toyota Camry. Regarding the healthcare, what special healthcare do you believe they're receiving that other age-matched, active LDS on average aren't receiving? And how much do you think that's contributing to their perceived longevity? With all the speculation on President Monson's cognitive decline, what first class treatment do you believe he's receiving that most anyone else in the Salt Lake valley is not? 2

Well I admit I don't know much, but because of the fact that he has a private jet, he probably gets the best medicine and goes to the Hospital when necessary. Many Americans don't have healthcare. As for not being attractive, why not? It is not a stressful job.

A stressful job at that age would impact their health, so I don't think their job as General Authority is stressful.

Are you suggesting he shouldn't be getting great healthcare because not everybody has access to it? It seems pretty silly to be criticizing a leader of a large organization for having access to great healthcare. 3

Hanks who was called at 31 and served 39 years as a GA. He had alzheimers or something like that in his declining years but he was in some kind of health facility and the Church better have been footing the bill! he gave them 39 years for crying out loud!
