Mormon Prophets on the Climate, Environment, and Pollution

“atmospheric carbon dioxide and water vapor, have other offices to perform of prime importance to mankind. Among them is the power of keeping all animals and plants warm...As Professor LeConte puts it, "The blanket put about the earth to keep it warm is woven of carbon dioxide and water vapor” -  Elder JOHN A. WIDTSOE,  Improvement Era, 1900  GospelLink

“What appears to be slightly corroborative of this theory came in April, 1923, from the American consul in Bergen, Norway, in the form of a report to the Department of Commerce in Washington. The consul stated, as reported, that the Arctic Ocean had become much warmer that winter. Seals were retiring far north to the ice field much beyond their usual grounds. Ice fields were disappearing, glaciers were melting in Greenland, leaving bare ravines and moraines never seen before. The white-fish have vanished and herring and smelt have gone north to take their places. Dr. Hoel, geologist of the University of Norway, had just returned from an arctic expedition and reported that he found very little ice and that his soundings to a depth of more than two miles showed the north arm of the Gulf Stream very warm as far up as 81 degrees 21 minutes, nearly 14 degrees inside the arctic circle. An arctic fisherman, he stated, said that it has been growing warmer in the arctic since 1918.” - Commentary on the Book of Mormon, vol. 4  JANNE M. SJODAHL, GEORGE REYNOLDS (General Authority)

“And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter." Could this result from atomic fallout or pollutions from the factories of the world? Or will it be brought to pass by some law of nature beyond our control?” - Millennial Messiah: The Second Coming of the Son of Man by BRUCE R. MCCONKIE

“This is a challenging time for young people. Every day we are assaulted with big worries: global warming, wars and rumors of wars, drought, a possible pandemic of some infectious disease, and a possible recession. Seacoast cities are worrying about the rising level of the ocean, which will bring ocean tides to their doorsteps or over the thresholds. But as serious as all this is, I worry more about the rising tide of evil in the world around us” - Elder Oaks

“Their concerns range from wars, rumors of wars, famine, and inflation to drug addiction, climate changes, pollution...However, a look at the causes of the difficulties proves that they are man-made and that solutions are within man’s ability to accomplish” - Elder Tom Perry

Indeed, we should probably concoct some sort of Final Solution to the Christian Question to get rid of them.

Only if at first, sanctioning them into submission to join the new Mother Earth Church fails.  Then of course we will have no other choice

All due deference to Brother Widsoe, but CO2 was established as a Greenhouse Gas in 1850, 22 years before he was born.

He was not claiming to be prophesying.

at least Brother Widsoe was basically saying that CO2 traps heat. He said CO2 has " the power of keeping all animals and plants warm"

Today, problem is that we are adding too much extra CO2.

I am still not fully convinced going from 280 ppm to 400 ppm over a 100 year period is a big deal.   Regardless if it does warm the planet up, I am all for it.  Perhaps we might grow to love a little warmer world.

Once the climate stabilizes again we might but usually the years surrounding major climate changes are a bit dicey. Mass extinctions and things like that. We just have to hope our food sources make it through okay.

Then why did you give all due deference as if you were disagreeing?

I'm not disagreeing with Brother Widtsoe. He just wasn't the first to say it. Maybe the world would have been better off if they'd listened.

At what temperature does ice melt?

by quoting Elder Widtsoe I proved to many LDS that CO2 science is not new, or a recent invention.
Here is the full context of what Elder Widtsoe said

According to Jesus' prophecies and the Book of Revelation, the world is going to end with a whole raft of catastrophes.  None of it having to do with minuscule percentage increase in the amount of a very trace element.

CO2 is only 0.036% of the air.

Let's cut out the hysteria and the hyperventilation.

Let's especially cut out the hyperventilation with its excess exhalation of CO2.

That little trace is responsible for all life on this planet.

Oversimplification.  Oxygen, water, etc . . . provide the impetus of life . . . CO2 is the byproduct of animal energy exchange . . . in turn CO2 is used as input to processes of vegetattion . . .

Without CO2 there can be no plants. Without Carbon there is no life period.  CO2 comes from many different places.

CO2 inputs into vegetation is just one of many processes for life to exist. Again too much CO2 inhibits plant growth including but not limited to added nutrients and water demands.

So we can be bad stewards because worse things are going to happen?

0.040% is a mimiscule amount of alcohol in the bloodstream but if you work in a safety sensitive transportation job and get that result you are pulled off the job. By small and simple things are great extinctions brought about.
