There are no excommunication police making sure that members who have gone through formal discipline are keeping to the conditions imposed upon them. Yes, there are. They're called bishops. One of the bishop's duties, as president of the Aaronic priesthood in his ward, is to preside over the sacrament. This includes enforcing restrictions imposed by priesthood keys. Perhaps there are bishops, somewhere, who would say to themselves, if people continue taking the sacrament despite being restricted, "Well, darn. Nothing I can or should do there. It's on them." I don't think there are very many. And I don't know any or of any people who have ever defiantly tested this, really. Quote There are no conditions which require them not to make any comments during a class. More on this below (with your CFR response). Quote If you contend that ex'd and disfellowshipped members are precluded from participating in classes I shall have to CFR please. As I mentioned, this is something I have always understood, and my stake president's understanding as well. When the member pointed out that the handbook doesn't technically mention participation in class, I told him I would find out from Salt Lake through the stake president. He asked on my behalf, and the answer that came back was "it's up to the bishop." Meaning, that it's a draw on this particular CFR, I think. I learned that a bishop may lift these restrictions, if he chooses, but he may also impose them, if he chooses. Edited December 10, 2015 by rongo

I can't do much about that, other than disagree. 59 minutes ago, hope_for_things said: I'm LDS, have been all my life. I agree that God speaks to men and women throughout history and today. I wondered, because your flowery soliloquy about "the unknowable God" seemed to be somewhat at odds with LDS belief. In fact, it came across to me as rather Protestant in tone. Here is what Joseph Smith said in the King Follett discourse about the necessity to come to know the true character of God. Please note in particular the portions I have emphasized with boldface type: Quote The Character of God In the first place, I wish to go back to the beginning—to the morn of creation. There is the starting point for us to look to, in order to understand and be fully acquainted with the mind, purposes and decrees of the Great Eloheim, who sits in yonder heavens as he did at the creation of the world. It is necessary for us to have an understanding of God himself in the beginning. If we start right, it is easy to go right all the time; but if we start wrong we may go wrong, and it will be a hard matter to get right. There are but a very few beings in the world who understand rightly the character of God. The great majority of mankind do not comprehend anything, either that which is past, or that which is to come, as it respects their relationship to God. They do not know, neither do they understand the nature of that relationship; and consequently they know but little above the brute beast, or more than to eat, drink and sleep. This is all man knows about God and His existence, unless it is given by the inspiration of the Almighty. If a man learns nothing more than to eat, drink and sleep, and does not comprehend any of the designs of God, the beast comprehends the same things. It eats, drinks, sleeps, and knows nothing more about God; yet it knows as much as we, unless we are able to comprehend by the inspiration of Almighty God. If men do not comprehend the character of God, they do not comprehend themselves. I want to go back to the beginning, and so lift your minds into more lofty spheres and a more exalted understanding than what the human mind generally aspires to. I want to ask this congregation, every man, woman and child, to answer the question in their own hearts, what kind of a being God is? Ask yourselves; turn your thoughts into your hearts, and say if any of you have seen, heard, or communed with Him? This is a question that may occupy your attention for a long time. I again repeat the question—What kind of being is God? Does any man or woman know? Have any of you seen Him, heard Him, or communed with Him? Here is the question that will, peradventure, from this time henceforth occupy your attention. The scriptures inform us that “this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” (John 17:3.) If any man does not know God, and inquires what kind of a being He is—if he will search diligently his own heart—if the declaration of Jesus and the apostles be true, he will realize that he has not eternal life; for there can be eternal life on no other principle. My first object is to find out the character of the only wise and true God, and what kind of a being He is; and if I am so fortunate as to be the man to comprehend God, and explain or convey the principles to your hearts, so that the Spirit seals them upon you, then let every man and woman henceforth sit in silence, put their hands on their mouths, and never lift their hands or voices, or say anything against the man of God or the servants of God again. But if I fail to do it, it becomes my duty to renounce all further pretensions to revelations and inspirations, or to be a prophet; and I should be like the rest of the world—a false teacher, be hailed as a friend, and no man would seek my life. But if all religious teachers were honest enough to renounce their pretensions to godliness when their ignorance of the knowledge of God is made manifest, they will all be as badly off as I am, at any rate; and you might just as well take the lives of other false teachers as that of mine. If any man is authorized to take away my life because he thinks and says I am a false teacher, then, upon the same principle, we should be justified in taking away the life of every false teacher, and where would be the end of blood? And who would not be the sufferer? Quote I just don't see any evidence that this communication is done in clear and unmistakable ways. If God speaks to mortals, and I believe he does, then how does that process work, is it clear and unmistakable? No, there isn't any evidence of that, and I'm not aware of present or past church leaders who proclaim such clear communication. You say you've been LDS all your life, and yet you fail to understand the process by which revelation occurs. Oh my! Let me help you with that. Please see this page, ponder the text I have excerpted below, and examine the links on that page. Quote Revelation is communication from God to His children. This guidance comes through various channels according to the needs and circumstances of individuals, families, and the Church as a whole. When the Lord reveals His will to the Church, He speaks through His prophet. Prophets are the only people who can receive revelation for the Church, but they are not the only people who can receive revelation. According to our faithfulness, we can receive revelation to help us with our specific personal needs, responsibilities, and questions and to help us strengthen our testimony. Additional Information The scriptures tell of different types of revelation, such as visions, dreams, and visitations by angels. Through such channels, the Lord has restored His gospel in the latter days and revealed many truths. However, most revelations to leaders and members of the Church come through the whisperings of the Holy Ghost. Quiet spiritual promptings may not seem as spectacular as visions or angelic visitations, but they are just as powerful and lasting and life changing. The witness of the Holy Ghost makes an impression on the soul that is more significant than anything we can see or hear. Through such revelations, we will receive lasting strength to stay true to the gospel and help others do the same. Quote Do church leaders get things 100% wrong some times, make mistakes, errors in doctrine? Yes, we have a multitude of evidence throughout scripture and latter day Mormon history to show that. Why are you so confident then, that this policy accurately represents God's will and mind? Can you eliminate the possibility of it being erroneous? Though individual Church members and even leaders have sometimes expressed personal opinions that turned out to be wrong, I have never known the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve acting as a body in the authority of their callings to do so. And yes, based on my faith in God and His apostles and Prophets, and based on the consistency with which the policy conforms to doctrine and principle given in the past, I can eliminate in my own mind the possibility of it being erroneous. 1

Calling this anti-Mormon propaganda, nefarious, calumnious, and false is hyperbole at its best. I don't understand this position. I have no way of knowing the original intent of the policy but I can easily see that the written policy does not match the clarification. In fact, it still doesn't. I don't think the actual policy wording has changed at all. Anyways I struggle being told that the clearly written policy doesn't say what it says. It's there to read. If anyone is to blame for misunderstanding the policy it is the church for writing a policy that apparently bears little resemblance to the original intent. But that doesn't make me or anyone else anti-Mormon. 1
