Zina Huntington And Henry Bailey Jacob's Descendant Needs Help

Recommended Posts

This was posted on an old thread here and I offered to start a new thread dedicated to helping this new poster.

Here is their opening post:

I am a direct descendant of Zina from the Henry Bailey line. My great Aunt gave me records of Henry Bailey that are heartbreaking. He was sent on a mission, he was exiled, and he was not allowed to return to Utah according to his letters. I have been told that the journals are always passed to the youngest daughter of Zina's daughter Zina's blood line. I would like to find the journals in their entirety. I debated posting here for fear of some sort of retribution. I am saddened that the Jacobs name is hardly referenced in online documents. Henry's children with Zina; Henry and Chariton ended up being Brigham Young's drivers and it is unknown if they ever got to see their father Henry Bailey prior to his death. It is true that the Lds.org records gloss over this story. My intent isn't to rock the boat, but find her journals so I can compare them to Henry Bailey's account of the story. I do not intend to publish or disclose his information but know that when my grandfather was a child there was a lot of shame around keeping the secrets of the marriage and exile of Henry and Zina. I want to read the journals as I know they are partially in closed records so I want to find my relative that has them. Any help would be appreciated.

And, other posts:

Thanks everyone for your replies. ALarson I would be happy to have you post the thread. The other difficult part is that some of Henry Bailey's descendants would like me to keep quiet about all of it so it makes it a bit tricky to ask them for help. I have been told that the youngest daughter of each of the Zina's have the journals. If they have all been turned over to the church records I am not sure how likely I will be able to get a look at them.

As far as The Henry Bailey records I am planning to digitize them this summer. I understand that people are human, and things happen that make no sense. I don't believe the church or anyone today can explain away the truth about what happened back then. I have interviews with Zina at the end of her life where she explains what happened. The interviews are perplexing and very informative. Her journals would really help me understand.

When I was in college I was walking in the SLC cemetary in the avenues. Zina, buried near Zebulon Baily and wife. (Henry Chariton Jacobs is buried in Mt. Pleasant,Utah) and there it was on the grave stone Zina Diantha "wife of Brigham Young" "Mother" and in the same area a very small gravestone Henry Bailey. It was not marked with father or husband. I honestly stumbled upon it a few weeks after my aunt had given me the Henry Bailey records. I don't think it is a coincidence. Lately I am up nights thinking about this story.

Anyway, a delicate family matter, perhaps an even more delicate church matter, yet somehow the spirits of the past are not at rest. Or perhaps I am not at rest not knowing the real story. I believe we can learn many things from our own stories, our family stories and most often the truth.

So, I will look at all of the above and thanks for re-posting my original thread ALarson. I don't want to spook Zina's other family. It is just that I want to know the truth. She was my great great great grandmother. Without Henry Bailey and Zina I would not be here.

.........

Here's a link to LDS Archive response to zina huntington:   http://churchhistorycatalog.lds.org/primo_library/libweb/action/dlSearch.do?search_scope=CHL&institution=PCHD&onCampus=true&highlight=true&displayField=title&displayField=creator&displayField=description&displayField=ispartof&displayField=lds02&vid=CHL_PUBLIC&query=any,contains,zina%20huntington

I once contacted them and simply asked for my ancestors journals.   (I was there in person).   They told me what was available and brought out each item one at a time for me to look at.  I spent a full day.   I did have to prove my relationship.

ALarson thank you for posting and all of you for all of your efforts. I can be reached at HenryandZinaJacobs at gmail dot com. I am not currently living in Utah so I have to plan a lot around going to the Church library and requesting items that I may or may not be able to photograph or copy. RPN were you able to copy or photograph the journals of your family?

Zina Y. Card and Zina D. Brown look like places to start for sure.

I had no idea the responses would be so quick and I have had a cat at the vet for the past couple of days so I apologize for not sending out gratitude sooner. I am sure that at Ancestry dot com I can find a few things. I just know that my family did not do the records for the daughter that Zina had with Brigham Young, or at least I haven't seen it. I am sure it is a common and available record since she was such a prominent woman at the beginning of the church.

Signing off for now. I will let you all know what I find. At some point I will figure our how and where to share Henry's side of the story. It is very interesting for sure. Thank you all.

I know that many will love to read that!  He is a person from church history that is of great interest and his story should be told.  I look forward to seeing what you write.  Keep us posted on your progress :)

That wouldn't be Sanpitch for Sanpete county where they grow carn on the cob and and eat with farks and knives would it? ;)

Nice to meet you!! When I was 10 or 11 I remember having a small part in a stake play that was centered around the Martin Handcart company and it had a part for Clara!

Yes, we rode harses throught the carn.  Sanpitch is the river (or small crick) through Sanpete.  The Mellors settled Fayette where I grew  up.  But we've got to get back on the main topic.

Catching minnows at the spring and floating on my raft down the crick are wonderful memories while visiting my grandparents & great grandma. I know you'd have to know my family now....ok, back to Zina and Henry, sorry!

Tacenda, just a little more off topic, I'm McKay from Edwin and Elaine, grandparents William and Ozemba, and James William and Sarah.  I'm almost as old as the hills.
